Secret Smile
One word of reassurance from Ike reminds Soren that his soul has been pure since the day that he was born.
One touch from Ike makes Soren jump ever so slightly and brings him to the reality that he doesn't deserve to be alone.
One gift on Christmas or on his birthday from Ike causes Soren to think over and over again that maybe, just maybe, this life of his is worth living after all.
Soren wants to thank him, but he's not sure how. He has nothing to give but his heart, but it's difficult to return it to Ike when Ike was the one who gave it to him in the first place. He has no special place to take him to, because the only places that he's been to have been lonely roads and houses full of hate and towns whose inhabitants give looks that can kill and destroy in an instant.
All Soren thinks that he can do is say something with the voice that Ike gave him, and hope that it'll be enough-- but still, he doesn't believe that he even knows how to do that very well.
"Ike, have I ever thanked you for everything?" Soren asks casually one day as he watches Ike clean his swords. His voice is low, emotionless--or at least, he hopes that it is. He holds his breath as Ike pauses and looks up, a puzzled expression appearing on his face.
"Thanked me... for... everything?" he asks.
"Yes. For saving me and convincing your father to let me stay and... for everything else."
Ike just stares for a few moments. Soren starts to believe that he shouldn't have said anything at all and that he's so stupid for thinking this could work in the first place before Ike finally smiles and says, "Well, no, you haven't. But there isn't any need for that, anyway."
"Why not?" Soren says after allowing himself to exhale.
"You've already thanked me."
"I doubt that."
"You shouldn't. You just continuing to live and breathe is thanking me enough, honestly."
And Soren doesn't say anything more. He just leaves and he doesn't turn back so Ike can see the faint smile on his face.
