All I Ask
Their lives are supposed to be taken seriously. Their lives are not circus acts. Their lives are in danger every single second of every single day because of a long ago that cannot be erased and replaced with better memories and better outcomes of a raging war.

Still, Tormod insists on putting himself out in the open where the enemies can see him and destroy him if they have enough power because life is just too boring if he doesn't. Still, Tormod insists of letting his impatience take over him and let him run out to attack without anyone to back him up if something goes wrong because the attention must be on him.

Muarim simply wishes that Tormod would realize this, wishes that he would realize that his magic is bound to turn and take its toll on him one day. He does not want the fire that he possesses to defend himself and his friends to turn on him and burn and consume him and bring him to a death that could have easily been prolonged.

But Muarim cannot and will not dare to try to change him--because every other time he has tried to make a difference in someone's life, he has been punished. He has failed, and he has fallen. And so he watches from the sidelines and does all that he can without pushing himself and Tormod too far, without destroying everything that they have built up over the long and tiresome years.

(And he always asks Tormod silently: Why is it just too much if I never want to see or bury your frozen and lifeless and unresponsive and breathless and bloody body?)
