Backstory, part1, part2, part3

Yesung silently closed the door into his room. It wasn’t that he disliked getting more family members or that they brought friends over. It was the noise they made which he wasn’t that into. Donghae and his friends had a tendency to sound more like hoard of elephants and for a person who wasn’t used to it, it took its toll.

Yesung strolled over to his desk and picked up a song sheet. It was one of the songs he was going to prepare for the recital that his grade was going to hold. Yesung had been given four solo songs to sing and he was happy. Happy, and very nervous. Yesung had lost a lot of ground a couple of years ago when he had developed a severe case of pneumonia, both when it came to his singing and his academic work. He had been forced to stay back one year, and whenever he coughed the slightest, either Leeteuk or Kangin had him at the doctors before he could blink. Or so Yesung perceived it. He wasn’t really all that fragile.

The kids were good for his brother and his partner though. They gave Kangin and Leeteuk something to focus their energy on.

Donghae, as Yesung saw it had a quite a couple of rough edges but he was easily to read since he was very open and honest and he had a lot of energy. Yesung shook his head, he would never make the mistake to give him sugar again.

Ryeowook, Yesung had noticed, was a lot calmer, loved spending time with Leeteuk and was probably the one with the strongest will out of the three boys. Yesung didn’t think his brother had noticed, but neither Sungmin nor Donghae ever went against Ryeowook and yet he was the youngest. Maybe it was because they just didn’t want to upset him but Yesung didn’t really believe that.

Sungmin on the other hand was very quiet and in Yesung’s opinion pretty depressed. Not that he blamed Sungmin for not being Mr. Sunshine but he was worried about the younger boy. Sungmin was very withdrawn and the only time he voluntarily talked was when one of his brothers was the subject of the discussion. Otherwise he was mostly silent. Yesung was happy to notice though that the clothes he had given to Sungmin on the last day of his hospital stay were still some of his favourite things. Yesung made a mental note to buy something more the next time he went shopping.

Even through the closed door Yesung could hear Donghae’s and his friends’ laughter and high voices. There was no way he was going to get anything done here. Yesung gathered his things together and decided to go back to school. Another thing that was good having the three boys here was that he had been given a lot more of freedom. Kangin wasn’t on his case every time he wanted to go somewhere. It seemed to Yesung that he cared less these days. Or maybe it was that he just didn’t have the energy to care, Yesung thought dryly to himself. Adopting three orphans with harsh backgrounds wasn’t very easy, and Kibum’s changes in the corporation had began giving the wanted results and it meant that Kangin, and Leeteuk too somewhat, had to give it a lot of attention.

Yesung wrote a quick message on one of the whiteboards.

‘Out with a friend, will be home later. Call me if you want something.’

If he’d write down that he had gone back to school there would be a lot of unnecessary questions and worry. It was easier this way.

Lessons hadn’t ended a minute too soon for Yesung, he loved his singing lessons but math and physics just weren’t his favourite things especially when he and his other school mates were going to practise for their show afterwards. Yesung flipped his phone open and dialled a number, he waved absently at Jaejoong who was leaving after their practise. Their music teacher had been pretty satisfied with the both of them today and Yesung was proud of the praise they had gotten.

“Teukie-ah? It’s me.”

“No, no, nothing is wrong.”

“No, school was fine.”

“Yeah, that sounds great.”

“Really?” Yesung swallowed.

“Would you mind giving them my apologies?”

Yesung licked his lips nervously and leaned, against a nearby wall.

“I promised Jaejoong that I we would practise on our duet today. He won’t have time over the next couple of days and we’ve decided on it days ago.”

Yesung was quiet for a long while, listening to Leeteuk.

“Yeah, but I just can’t break a promise and it’s for school after all, it’s not like we’re doing this just because we don’t have anything better to do.”

“Ok. I’m really sorry that I can’t make it, I haven’t seen Kibum, Hana and the baby in a long time.”

“I’ll probably spend the night over at Jaejoong’s. No his parents don’t mind or else I wouldn’t be doing it.”

“Yeah, ok, see you tomorrow.”

Yesung snapped his phone shut with shaking hands before sinking down to the floor. Before Kibum had met his beautiful wife Yesung had often stayed over at his house. Since Kibum was so close to Kangin and Leeteuk he too viewed Yesung as a precious younger brother and taken care of him. Often picking him up after school when Kangin couldn’t, taking him out for movies and dinners, making him feel important even though Yesung was so much younger than him.

Yesung on the other hand hadn’t seen Kibum as brother, at first he had but after he had become a teenager, the brotherly feelings had changed into something else. Yesung stared down at his hands. Whatever he was feeling was totally useless though. Two years ago Kibum had met Hana, a beautiful, intelligent and kind girl. Kibum had fallen instantly in love, five months later they had been engaged, the marriage had taken place three months after that and now Hana was pregnant with their first child. The only word Yesung could use to describe the two of them was happiness, and watching Hana being the source of that happiness made him seethe in jealousy. It was not something that Yesung was proud of, on the contrary he was ashamed of himself for feeling like this.

Yesung wondered just about how much of a bad person he was, or what he had done in an earlier life to make everyone that he loved go away. Logically he knew that it wasn’t something he had done and that the world wasn’t out to get him but sometimes it felt like it.

Yesung took a deep breath before straightening up. He grabbed his bag which he had put down earlier and made his way towards the music room. It was one of Yesung’s favourite places in school and he would be able to play the piano as he practiced his songs. There was a nice couch placed there too and it was pretty comfortable, Yesung knew this from experience.

Yesung happily shovelled the forkfuls of scrambled eggs and bacon into his mouth. Leeteuk’s cooking was as always delicious. Leeteuk was busy putting food on a tray which he planned on bringing up to his and Kangin’s bedroom.

“Why aren’t you eating breakfast here today?” Yesung asked curiously.

“Your dearest brother had the nerve to laugh yesterday when Donghae called me mum.” Leeteuk grumbled. “I felt it was time to remind him exactly how much I’m not like a woman.” Leeteuk had a very satisfied look on his face. “I don’t think Kangin will be able to sit down very comfortable today.”

During the time Leeteuk had been talking Yesung had dropped his fork down beside his plate, slapped his hands over his ears and was saying ‘la la la la la can’t hear you la la la la’ over and over again.

Leeteuk only laughed at him.

“Oh come on Yesung!”

“I so did not need to hear that hyung!” Yesung glowered at him.

“Yesung, we’ve lived together for plenty of years now, I’m pretty sure you know what we do behind closed doors.” Leeteuk grinned teasingly at the teenager.

“Yeah, yeah, but I don’t want to think about it, and I certainly don’t need you to paint pictures for me, thank you very much. I’ve lost my appetite because of it.” Yesung said mournfully before shovelling in some more food into his mouth and drinking up half the glass of orange juice which stood in front of him.

“Yeah, I can see how it affected your appetite.” Leeteuk said dryly.

Yesung didn’t bother to answer, instead he continued emptying his plate. Leeteuk picked up his tray, walked up to Yesung and dropped a kiss on top of his head.

“You’re really very cute.”

Yesung rolled his eyes, his mouth was too full for him to make a verbal answer.

“Oh, the kids are in the living room watching cartoons.” Leeteuk added from the doorway. “Thought I should mention it in case you want to hide from them.” Leeteuk winked at Yesung before heading towards his bedroom.

Yesung rolled his eyes again, there was a reason, or rather three reasons, why he was sitting in the kitchen and not in front of the TV, watching his favourite soap as was his want on Saturdays. Yesung had come to the conclusion that it was better to tape it and watch it later then trying to see it with Sungmin and Ryeowook pouting at him and Donghae climbing all over him, trying to snatch the remote control from him. Yesung shook his head, he really liked the three kiddies but they didn’t exactly radiate a calm and serene aura.

Yesung groaned when he woke up and realised it was still night, he glared at the alarm clock which showed 03.18. Yesung stared up at the ceiling, he could stay in bed and count sheep or he could get up and go get something in the kitchen. He debated quietly for a couple of minutes before he resignedly got up and shoved his feet into a pair of slippers. Maybe a cup of hot milk would make him sleepy again.

Yesung frowned and stopped outside Sungmin’s room, through the slight spring between the bottom of the door and the floor he could make out a slight ray of light. It meant that Sungmin had to be awake when he should be asleep. Yesung knocked gently before opening the door and stepping inside.

Sungmin sat curled up at the head of the bed. The blankets were pulled up tightly around him and he was hugging his legs close to his chest. He didn’t bother to look up to see who it was that came in. Yesung sat down beside the younger boy and gently lifted his bangs from his eyes.

“There you are.” Yesung murmured.

He got no answer. Instead Sungmin angrily wiped his eyes and continued to ignore the ‘intruder’. Yesung sighed deeply and wondered what he was supposed to do? He was the moody one, or had been the moody one in the family before the three kids had moved in, it was Leeteuk or Kangin who knew how to deal with this, not him. Yesung pursed his lips, he couldn’t leave Sungmin all alone in his room crying. It just wouldn’t do.

“I’m not good at this you know.” He bagan. “I’m not good at getting people to talk and for some reason others often calls me odd.” Yesung looked a bit chagrined. “And you probably don’t want to speak with me either about what’s bothering you but I was on my way down to get some hot milk, why don’t you come with me and keep me company? You can make sure that I won’t burn down the house. I’m sure Leeteuk will appreciate that.” Yesung looked thoughtful. “Kangin probably wouldn’t mind since it is insured and I actually think he’d love being able to redesign it to his taste.” A slight shudder went through Yesung and he made a face. “Sungmin, you really need to come with me and make sure I don’t forget to turn off the stove, we really, really don’t want to live in a house Kangin has designed.”

Yesung stood up and looked expectantly on Sungmin. The boy’s shoulders slumped for a second before he carefully began the process of unwrapping the blanket wrapped around him. Yesung grinned and quickly went to grab Sungmin’s robe and when the boy came up to him, Yesung quickly handed it over.

“Come on, maybe we’ll find something else in the fridge.”

Yesung hummed happily while he looked into the fridge, he could see sausages, eggs, leftover food from dinner, different slices of meat, vegetables to name some of the contents. Sungmin had already grabbed the milk and had poured some of it into a kettle. Sungmin took two mugs from one of the cupboards and put them on the kitchen counter beside the stove. Yesung in the meantime had been very busy taking out things that he wanted to eat.

“Sungmin, is there something special that you want? What do you say about a couple sandwiches? We have nutella and peanut butter. I think Teukie tried to hide the jar of peanut butter because brother dearest has a tendency to devour it if he knows it’s there.” Yesung grinned at Sungmin. “How about we eat it up and put the blame on Kangin?” He wiggled his eyebrows for emphasis.

“Hyung!” Sungmin sounded chocked but Yesung saw the slight smile before the boy turned back towards the stove, making sure that the milk wasn’t going to cook over.

“Ok, so we won’t put the blame on Kangin but peanut butter sandwiches sounds good to me.” Yesung put the jar down and went to get the bread.

There were perks on coming from a rich family, one of them was having staff who made sure that fresh things, like bread, vegetables, fruit, were kept fresh and if needed bought new ones. Leeteuk wasn’t a fan of it in the beginning, since he wanted to buy groceries by himself but after realising that whenever it had been Kangin’s week to buy food, he only asked one of the staff to do it and also to make sure that everything else they wanted or needed was in the kitchen too and that it worked much better on Kangin’s weeks then on his own. Leeteuk admitted defeat gracefully, much to Kangin’s, Yesung’s and the staffs’ relief. The staff had probably been the most happy about it, they were used taking care of the young masters and the matron in the kitchen had not been very happy about the new order, not only wasn’t she allowed to cook every meal for the boys any more, she wasn’t even allowed to provide them with food! Yesung shook his head at the memory of the ‘discussions’ between her and Leeteuk when Leeteuk had discovered her poking around in his kitchen. Two very verbal people with strong wills in a room full with sharp objects and other dangerous things were not a really good combination in Yesung’s opinion. It had ended well and these days the matron and Leeteuk were the best of friends and accomplices in making sure that everyone in the family ate good balanced meals.

Yesung opened one of the drawers and pushed a couple of things aside.

“Hyung? What are you doing?” Sungmin wondered as Yesung searching through the drawer where they kept spices.

“Aha! Found it!” Yesung said in a victorious voice.

In Yesung’s hand was a bar of white chocolate. Sungmin looked at him questioningly. Yesung just grinned at him, went to the stove, poured the hot milk into the cups and then he put in some pieces of the chocolate too. He grabbed a spoon and stirred gently. Making sure that the chocolate had melted before handing the cup to Sungmin.

“Here, try this. It’s Yesung’s special.”

Sungmin carefully took a small sip and Yesung got to watch his whole face light up in delight. Sungmin took a bigger sip and gave Yesung a happy smile.

“Good, right?”

“Very good!” Sungmin practically beamed.

“It’s a lot of sugar though since it’s white chocolate.” Yesung scratched his head. “You probably shouldn’t share this with Donghae.”

Sungmin giggled and sat down at the kitchen table.

“This can be our secret hyung.”

“Good boy.” Yesung murmured before taking a bite of his peanut butter sandwich.

It was time. Today was the day Yesung had practised so hard for and he knew he and his schoolmates were going give the audience a great show. He was a bit sad that Leeteuk and the kids wouldn’t be able to come but Kangin would be there and that was enough for him. Knowing that his brother was going to sit in the audience gave Yesung a huge sense of security.

It was soon Yesung’s turn to enter the stage for the first time tonight, he was going to sing five solos tonight and he had put in a lot of time and effort practicing. Yesung walked out onto the stage, he was incredibly nervous and as always when he was nervous he searched for the one person that made him feel secure. He had given his brother the ticket so he knew where he was supposed to sit.

The seat was empty. For a moment Yesung couldn’t move and he missed his cue. He quickly realized it though and the second time when the music started playing he sang. Even though he was disappointed and hurt, the show must go on.

Yesung sank down on the floor, staring empty in front of him, he looked down on his phone and it showed no missed phone calls or messages. Yesung closed his eyes and leaned his head against the wall. The show had been a success. Everyone had done so much better than at the rehearsals. All the hard work they had done had really paid off. After the concert the students were supposed to gather together and have some snacks with their families. Yesung shook his and grabbed his bag which was sitting beside him. It was time for him to go home.

Yesung was just about to fall asleep when the door to his room burst open. He quickly looked up and saw Kangin standing there. Yesung turned around and pulled the blanket over his head, he didn’t want to talk to Kangin.

Soon he felt the mattress dip down and he knew that Kangin was sitting down beside him. Yesung heard Kangin taking a deep breath and he knew the excuse would be coming shortly.

“I don’t know what to say.” Kangin rubbed a tired hand over his eyes. “I, I wish I had a good excuse for not even calling you, but I don’t.”

Kangin tugged the blanket down so he at least could see part of Yesung’s face.

“Yesung.” Kanging sighed. “If I could turn back the clock I would, but I can’t. I really wanted to watch you on stage today. I really wanted to. To hear you sing again after so long in front of an audience....”

Kangin gently touched Yesung’s brow.

“I talked to one of your teachers on my way home. I’m sure he wasn’t so happy about me calling so late but never mind. He told me that you were wonderful. That you were the talk of everyone afterwards and that he was sorry you left as soon as it was over.” Kangin sighed. “I wish I could have been there. I know, I keep repeating myself but I really do. I know you’re angry with me, and you have every right to be angry. I just wanted you to know that I really regret not being able to go.”

For a couple of minutes no one said anything. Kangin sighed deeply, before leaning over and planting a kiss on Yesung’s forehead.

“I guess you’re not going to talk to me tonight. If it’s any conciliation Teukie is furious with me and I’m angry at myself too.” Still no response, “I love you Jongwoon.”

Kangin stood up and looked down at his brother, he bent down slightly and gently fixed the blanket around him before leaving.

Yesung opened his eyes when the door closed behind Kangin.

“Angry?” He whispered, “I’m not angry, I’m disappointed and hurt.”

Yesung stayed away from home even more now than he had done before. He just wanted to be alone and not having to answer questions. A small part of him wished that someone, anyone would come after him.

School had ended hours ago and Yesung was sitting on one of the swings on the playground for the younger kids in the lower grades. He wasn’t swinging really, just sitting there and not really looking at anything.

“Yesung-ah, are you really supposed to be here?”

Yesung looked up and met Kibum’s smiling face. Perfect, one of the persons he didn’t really want to see. Yesung just shrugged his shoulders, he really didn’t feel like talking. If he wanted to talk he wouldn’t be sitting on a swing in an empty playground.

“You know, it was my fault that Kangin didn’t have the time to go watch you sing. I forced him to stay and take care of an important business associate.”

Yesung only nodded. The only thing Kibum could see was the top of Yesung’s head since the teenager apparently found the ground very interesting.

Kibum crouched down in front of Yesung so that he could get eye contact and doing so stopped the slow pending movement of the swing.

“I haven’t seen you in a long while. Your brother on the other hand tells me that you’ve spent a couple of nights at my place and wondered if you’d been a nuisance to me, Hana and Jinkyoung.”

Yesung tensed up and wouldn’t meet Kibum’s questioning gaze.

“You usually don’t lie Jongwoon.”

Inwardly Yesung winced, Kibum only used his given name when he was disappointed with him.

“Staying out all night won’t help anyone either, especially not you. You have realised that it’s getting colder and with your medical history you should know better. You’re not ten years old anymore.”

Yesung bit his lips.

“I’m not staying out all night.” He said sullenly. “I sleep in school for your knowledge, not that it’s any of your business.”

Kibum grabbed Yesung’s chin and forced him to meet his eyes.

“You made it my business when you lied to Kangin and Leeteuk about staying over at my home.”

Yesung averted his eyes.

“Sorry about that.” He mumbled.

Kibum let out an explosive sigh.

“You’re not a child anymore Jongwoon, and you’re not an adult either.” Kibum stood up and looked down at the young man in front of him. “I know you’ve been avoiding me and Hana, I’ve known that and I’ve let you do it and I think that might have been a mistake from my side.”

Again Kibum put his hand under Yesung’s chin and made him look at him.

“Whenever we visit each other you will be there, if not I’ll come and hunt you down. I’ve always managed to find you Jongwoon, and tonight is proof of that I still can find you. You will babysit Jinkyoung because heaven knows that I and Hana need a break now and then. You will also start talking to Kangin and Leeteuk about what’s bothering you because they are very worried about you.” Kibum shook his head when Yesung opened his mouth.

“Don’t say anything. They are worried. Or do you think they’re so stupid that they don’t know that you’re lying to them? Give them some credit. The kids moves in, and after a month or two you suddenly get a lot of friends at whose houses you spend the night? Please.” Kibum rolled his eyes. “Yesung did you really think that Kangin and Leeteuk didn’t realise what you were doing? They know you and they didn’t want to put any pressure by forcing you to talk to them, which is nice of them but I think they’re too close to you.”

Kibum pursed his lips together and Yesung flinched at the hard look the older man was giving him. It wasn’t his nice extra brother he was looking at, it was the Kim Corporation’s vice president.

“I’m not as nice or considerate as they are Jongwoon-ah, or guilt ridden. This behaviour is unacceptable. You are going to talk to Kangin and Leeteuk. You are going to stop lying to them. Since you have so much time on your hands you will babysit my daughter, and you will also start working extra at the homeless shelter project.”

Kibum held up a hand to stop Yesung’s protests.

“Not a word out of you. Now we are going to go and pick up your things, then I’m taking you home where you will tell Kangin and Leeteuk about what you’ve been up to and I am going to tell them what you are going to do after school and on the weekends.”

“You can’t tell me what I’m supposed to do!” Yesung shouted angrily. “You don’t have the right! You are not my guardian or my parent! You are-” Yesung angrily wiped away the angry tears. “You are supposed to be my friend!”

Kibum looked at the angry teenager, on the inside he hurt seeing Yesung this upset and lost, but on towards Yesung he didn’t show anything.

“I am your friend, but friends don’t lie or use each other.” Kibum paused to see if his words made any impact at all on Yesung and in grim satisfaction he saw that the boy’s anger had all but disappeared.  “Actually I am one of your guardians, as the vice president of the Kim Corporation I can tell you what to do and what not. Move it Jongwoon, we have stayed here long enough.”

A dark shape stepped out from behind one of the slides. Kangin took a deep breath and made his way to the school entrance where he and Kibum had both parked their cars. Kibum would make sure that Kangin got enough time to get home before he and Yesung would. It had been hard watching Kibum lecturing Yesung, but they had agreed that it was the wisest course to take. Kibum had been right, he and Leeteuk were too close and they were both feeling guilty for not having as much time for Yesung as they once had had. Their guilt had made them let Yesung do whatever it seemed he wanted to do and Kangin realised that it had been the wrong decision to make. It would end tonight.

Yesung groaned when his alarm clock rang. He wanted to throw the stupid thing out the window but he knew that it wouldn’t be any help in the end so instead he dragged himself out of the warm and comfortable bed while muttering about inconsiderate and power-hungry dictators. Three months had passed since Kibum had confronted him in the park and since then Yesung had changed enough dirty diapers for a lifetime. He made a face just thinking about it.

Yesung would never admit it but he enjoyed helping out at the shelter, he was only allowed to work a four hour shift, he started at 10AM and then it ended at 2PM, and the best thing was that either Kangin, Leeteuk and sometimes even Kibum worked with him. Mostly it was his brother and Yesung really enjoyed the time they were able to spend together. Both Kangin and Leeteuk had also made a point of setting off time only for him and it made Yesung feel good, if a bit embarrassed that he still needed them as much as he did, he was after all almost an adult.

“Yah!” Kangin banged on his door. “Are you up? We have to eat some breakfast before we leave or Teukie will scold us.”

Yesung opened the door and stepped out.

“I’m up, I’m up! You don’t have to break down the door you know.”

Kangin grinned at him unrepentantly.

“Aww, ish ‘ittle ‘Sungie a ‘ittle sleepy today.”

Yesung growled at him and stalked ahead of a laughing Kangin down the corridor.

“How can you stand him?” Yesung asked Leeteuk as soon as he entered the kitchen and gestured in the general direction of Kangin.

Leeteuk laughed and put down a plate with pancakes in front of Yesung.

“He has his moments.”

“Hey! I’m standing right next to you.” Kangin mock pouted and got a kiss from Leeteuk for his trouble.

“My eyes!” Yesung clapped both of his hands in front of his eyes to the amusement of Kangin and Leeteuk.

The kiddies, as Yesung called them, were sitting in front of the TV watching cartoons. They had been up for a long time already and Yesung wondered where on earth they found the energy to get up so early in the morning. He couldn’t remember that he had ever gotten up before 8AM just to watch something on TV.

Kangin’s phone rang and Leeteuk gave him a pointed look. Kangin gave him an apologetic look before looking at the display and answering.

“Yes?” Kangin frowned.

“Yes this is Kim Youngwoon.” Kangin picked up a cup of coffee and took a sip.

“What?!”

Before Yesung’s and Leeteuk’s eyes they saw Kangin turn pale and with a shaking hand he put the cup down.

“How?”

“No.” Kangin whispered.

“Oh God.”

Yesung and Leeteuk stared at each other while Kangin continued with his call, Yesung was getting a very bad feeling in his stomach. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

“Thank you, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Kangin put down the phone and with a shaking hand he rubbed his face before facing Leeteuk and Yesung with red rimmed eyes.

“Kibum, Hana and little Jinkyoung have been in a car accident. Hana” Kangin closed his eyes but it didn’t stop his tears. “Hana, Hana died instantly, Jinkyoung got some small injuries but nothing major, and Kibum-” Kangin’s voice broke, “Kibum is in ICU. He is badly hurt, but he’s stable.”

Yesung felt as if all the noise in the world had disappeared, the only thing he could hear was the beat of his heart and ‘Kibum is in ICU’, he also felt as if time had slowed down. He didn’t hear or see Kangin and Leeteuk clinging to each other for support and comfort. He didn’t take notice of when the two of them included him in the hug. He didn’t hear Leeteuk say that he would call Heechul and Han Geng and ask them to babysit.

Yesung didn’t really notice when Heechul, Han Geng and Kyuhyun arrived, he heard that Han Geng saying that he would go with them to the hospital and that Heechul and Kyuhyun would stay with the children. That got Yesung’s attention. He was not going to stay at home. He was going to the hospital too. He needed to go.

“I’m going too.” He announced.

“Yesung” Leeteuk looked hesitantly at him.

“I’m going.” Yesung repeated.

“Let him come.” Kangin said. “Even if we told him no, he’d just go there by himself.”

Hours later Yesung found himself sitting with Jinkyoung in his arms. He didn’t know how it had happened, he had been sitting beside Kibum and then someone had given him a bottle and Kibum’s crying daughter. Without thinking he had began feeding her and now looking down at her precious little face he knew he didn’t want to let her go.
