I was at the store today and the man behind the counter smiled as he told me he liked my necklace, a silver triquetra. As I noticed his ring, it had a pentacle on it, I smiled back and replied "I like your ring." I have little encounters like this at least once a week at work. Someone will come in for whatever reason, look at my necklace and nod with a knowing smile.
We are a secret society. We cook your food, serve it to you, stock the shelves, run the register, and manage the stores. We are your doctors, lawyers, and we teach your children. We are the people that respond when you call 911, we defend your country, and some of us even work in nice city, state and federal government offices. We are your daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands. We are everywhere, and we can blend in perfectly. Some of us choose to be open to all in our faith, some of us choose to only share with our family, and there are those of us that share with no one. Some of us wear openly the symbols of our faith, some of us choose to be more discrete. However, when we come across others wear the symbols of our beliefs there is a small smile, a nod, and an immediate bond passed between the two. Words need not be spoken, each wondering if the person next to the other knows their secrets, but we know, and we judge not. See, to us, the doctor is the same as the person scrubbing the dishes, the police officer is no different than the stock boys. We are all equal in the eyes of the Lord and Lady, no matter race, social position, financial means.
Then why is there so much fighting among us? We are so few in numbers why don't we bond as groups as we do when we come across another in an unsuspected place? There are so many different religions umbrellaed under Paganism and I realize that, but no matter the difference we are all seen as abnormal, why no join together in our difference from the "norm" and embrace the differences of our brothers and sisters? How do we expect others to accept us when we can't even accept ourselves?
