when i was little we lived in this ranch, the kitchen had mahogany cupboards and avocado-green linoleum. there were steps and a path lined with rose bushes leading up to the front door. the roses were fat and pink, with an exploding yellow center, like a firework. the bushes were always under attack from aphids and so we had to treat them once a year. we would go to the store and my mom would let me pick out the bag of ladybugs, and i would get to open the bag and release them onto the rose bushes and watch them devour the aphids in a mad fervor.
in the backyard was an avocado tree. It was so tall and skinny that it leaned over the pool like a sliver of a moon. The first year we lived there the tree was in bloom and avocados filled the pool. We had so many we never knew what to do with them, by the time my mother learned the tree was out of bloom. She waited expectantly the next year, only to find that that variety only bloomed every 5 years.
