The USS Macon, a dirigible airship of the US Navy, was a familiar sight across the United States in the early 1930s. Thousands of people would turn out to observe the “flying aircraft carrier” conducting training maneuvers. The USS Macon carried four biplanes on board. The ship and its four biplanes were lost in 1935 during severe weather offshore of Point Sur, California.
