My first real job in NYC was right around the corner from the Gaiety Theater. Don't specifically recall the theater, most if not all in Times Square in the early 80s had moved on to pornography and displayed their "XXX" proudly (next to the stores that openly sold illegal weapons: switchblades, brass knuckles, etc.) But I do remember the Gaiety Deli mid-block on 47th. Inside the Edison Hotel if I recall, which was looking rather run down at the time. For reals, the transformation of Times Square from then to the sugar coated, kid friendly ode to expenditure (well, it was always about that) is remarkable. Night and day. And back then the transformation of the Square from day to night was also remarkable. Crowded with tourists and office workers, the pimps, dealers, and sex workers became ever more prominent as the sun set.
