I intended on putting together a all-inclusive fingerwaves tutorial that shows all three methods of fingerwaving. But no matter how many times I tried I just cannot remember my setting pattern for pin curled fingerwaves. They just aren't turning out the way I want! Grrr. So no pin curl tut for now. But I did make one for actual finger sculpted waves, and a marcel wave tut will be done by the weekend hopefully because I really think the old one sucks.
Want waves like this?
The motion can be kind of tricky, so here's the video:

It doesn't start out very glamorous. Get your hair wet. Not damp, WET. But not dripping wet either..a good medium. You will want it wet so your hair is sculptable and will do whatever you tell it to.
Start with the 'small' side of your hair part. I always find this side easier. Run a comb through it about an inch or so and pull it towards the mirror. Use your fingers to tightly hold this section down. Comb down another inch from where your fingers are holding down the first half of the wave and this time pull it away from the mirror.
Yay, your first wave! Don't remove the comb! Insert a long metal clip (bobby pins aren't strong enough) into the center of the wave. This clip will give it that dip in the wave.
Place your fingers down tightly right under the wave, and use the comb to go towards the mirror again and clip in place in the center. Repeat for the rest of that side and the other side. I like pulling the first wave towards the mirror, but that's just personal prefernce.
Note: The thick side can be difficult, especially if you have thick hair. If it just doesn't work, I'd recommend getting it thinned out. Thinning is the best way to accomplish polished vintage styles.
Now pin curl the rest, or leave it and use a curling iron or hotsticks/rollers later on, but pin curls look the best with fingerwaves in my opinion.
Holy wall of text. Let's look at some more pictures. This is what you'll look like:
When you tie up your bandanna, don't let it cover the waves, it will flatten them! Tie it between the border of the waves and pincurls and secure tightly with bobby pins.
Next morning. Take out the pin curls and style them first. Go figure, mine didn't turn out very well because they didn't have enough time to dry. UGH
Hairspray before taking the clips out and enjoy!

I hope this was useful for some people :)
