Hello Chick-a-dees,
I posted pictures of my hair sometime last week with a Rita Hayworth inspired do. A few of you ladies asked for a tutorial of some sort, so i decided to share how I did this! I suppose this is a long hair tutorial but I'm sure it will work fine with medium length hair as well. Enjoy!
The Tools!
I use bendy curling rods Large (Sallys), Rat tail comb, Small round brush, Pantene - Sheer Volume Touchable hairspray, and Lotta Body setting lotion. (I dilute the setting lotion in a spray bottle: a little more than half setting lotion, water and a table spoon of my conditioner. I found this works well for me.)
I'm sure if you have thinner hair you could skip the conditioner in the solution.
Hair Before
This is my hair before I set it. Naturally my hair is curly but after I wash it i straighten it... then I style it in rollers. I found this works better for me because it kills the frizz. I have a combination of textured and regular hair but it's still thick.
Anyway you have to brush your hair out first!
Part your hair
in the center and separate your bangs from your hair.
Bangs
Spray the section of hair with the setting spray and a tad of the workable hairspray then roll the bangs back.
When you roll with bendy curlers you ALWAYS want to bend the ends of the roller in the opposite direction of the way you have your hair rolled or else it will loosen and fall. (My bangs are about 4 1/2 iches long)
Right Side
Okay, next section off the top half of the hair on the right an push aside the lower half for later.
Roll all the hair vertical and back. (remember the ends of the curlers bend opposite of the way the hair is rolled!)
The right side is to be rolled higher than the left, because when you do the final side part some of the right side of the hair will fall to the left and you want good volume on that side.
Left Side
Please excuse how messy this side is! I was in a rush. Seperate the top half from the bottom and put the bottom half aside. This side is lower than the right. Again the hair rolls vertical and back. (Don't forget to spray your setting lotion and flexible hair spray!)
- Sorry I don't have a photo! From here all the lower half of hair on both sides is rolled under and they can be horizontal. you don't have to be too neat just make them tight! I use smaller curlers on the bottom because my hair is layered and I want it all to be somewhat of a similar length, also because the bottom of my hair doesn't hold curl as well as my top.
- Let the hair set for 2-3 hours depending on the length and thickness, and if you use a bonnet dryer you can cut an hour of dry time.
- When it is all dried unroll your hair (lower layer first) and brush out with the round brush. Then brush out the upper layer and after that brush the bangs out and shape them with your brush curling them inward towards your eye. (Brush out your hair well, this is the most important part!)Then shape all your curls if you wish and spray with some more flexible hold spray or a heavier finishing spray if desired.
Cuddles!
I hope this was all easy to understand, please comment if you have any issues or questions!
