waving the back of your head

Two questions....

How do you marcel wave the back of your head? How do you even come close to making it look the way it's supposed to? I find the front hard enough to do, and at least there I can see what I'm doing.

My last attempt at this was like so, when my friends & I went to see Brief Encounter [sorry it's not terribly clear - was mainly documenting the night, not the hair!]:

I don't have any proper marcel-waving gear, so I used tons of Tresemme styling spray as setting lotion [worked pretty well actually, it did keep the shape I put it in], a fine comb and some kirby grips [I know these aren't ideal but I've nowt else!]

Given the tools I have, is there a better way of getting sharper, more curly waves... and as before, how on EARTH do I begin doing the back? I have long hair and I'd probably just find a way of pinning it in a coil or something, but I'd like the back of my head to look nicely waved...

And the second question: were there any hairstyles in the 20s that displayed the length of long hair, or was it ALWAYS styled short? I don't really like my neck & am going to a party as a flapper on Friday - so I'd like to wear it long if authentically possible.

TIA ladies... x
