Planning for Today

"We can't keep doing this." The voice in the dark echoed Jim's thoughts as Jim reached over the edge of his bed for his boxers. "One day you're going to discover my identity, or someone else will find out about this, and it'll be your job, or your life, your marriage, your family."

Jim scoffed, a sound rising unbidden from his throat before he answered, "My marriage is dead in the water."

"That still doesn't address--"

"No, it doesn't," Jim answered firmly in the direction of the disembodied voice. "It doesn't address all the million ways the crime-nuts in Gotham could use all our so-called weaknesses against us. But you know what?" He staggered to his feet, hitting the side table in the unfamiliar motel room and swallowing a curse. "You know what? I don't call them weaknesses. They're our strengths, our good character traits these criminals try to exploit. The minute I stop living my damned life because I'm afraid Maroni's gang or whatever new wack-job we have this week discovers that I have a life-- that's the day I hope some a bullet finally hits me. That's the day I've stopped being alive."

There was a swoop of fabric close to him and then cold kevlar pressed against Jim's body. "Don't say that," a growling voice demanded. "You know it'll all end for us one day."

"That day is not today," Jim whispered into the hot breath of the Batman. In an instant, the dark knight was gone, out the window probably. Jim didn't care. He had to get home.

And he'd meant every word he'd said. No matter all the horrible ways both he and the Batman could see this turning out, and all the very few ways it could ever turn out well, they had today, and today was what he was going to plan for.
