Summary: Liam was always the safe one of the two of them.
Author's Notes: This was based on the way I was originally going to have Tom die. His death has changed since then, but the sentiment is the same.
Liam was always the safe one of the two of them. Always thinking about what would get them in the least amount of trouble. He was the one who actually cared whether or not they were going to come away with collateral damage. Liam cared about people - life mattered to Liam. Tom always admired that about him. That he actually gave a shit.
Now Tom, on the other hand, could care less. When they were given a job to do, it was Tom who went in without a thought as to how many guns might be on the other side or whether or not there might be innocent people inside. He wasn't hired to protect anyone - he was hired to do the job.
There were plenty of times when Tom nearly got his head blown off and it was Liam who pulled him out of the way. Liam who saved Tom's life more than Tom saved Liam.
He was genuinely grateful for that.
But once Liam left and became a fucking policeman, it was harder for Tom to keep his head down. One time he'd got himself caught by a fucking Triad. By the time the lads were able to get him out, he was barely conscious, had nearly both eyes swollen shut, a broken nose, a broken ankle, a fractured wrist and his right thumb was cut nearly clean off. The doctors were barely able to sew it back on.
He'd even got himself shot in the stomach - thought he was going to die until Jake knocked him out to keep him from getting hysterical and losing even more blood. Tom had woken up in the hospital with barely a clue as to what had happened.
Tom was the reckless one. Liam was the sensible one.
So when Tom found himself confronted by a group of very angry Gallegos men, Liam somewhere outside with his fucking dancing slut, he had no doubts as to the outcome.
Tom was not at all surprised when he died.
