Had 'em both - the only way a kid could have gotten maimed by the shells would be to trip while chasing a friend with it. They were *very* soft plastic, and barely came out of the toy.

Just about the oldest toy of mine that I still have is my Mattel "Thunderburp" tommy gun. We probably got it used. Every now and then, I pull back and let a few bursts go. If it ever stops working, I'll still keep it.
