Bensinger’s was one of the great local downtown department stores that flourished in the early twentieth century. By the time I was around, it had relocated to the suburbs; in the nineties it was acquired by a national conglomerate and eventually closed completely. Their five-story flagship store on West Market Street still stands, with BENSINGER spelled out on the façade between the 3rd and 4th floors. Today it’s a FedEx, with what appears to be office space above.
