He actually passed away in 1960. His wife is the Duke of Edinburgh's [Queen Elizabeth II's husband] sister.
It was his engagement to Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt that set off the 'trial of the century' custody battle over 'little' Gloria Vanderbilt. Though he was married by the time the trial started, this is what set little Gloria's off her rocker--as Gloria herself says, her grandmother was "insane".
AND it was because of that trial that Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt's sister Thelma, Lady Furness, had to leave England to support her twin, AND her lover the Prince of Wales. She asked her friend Wallis Simpson to "look after the little man." We know how that went! :D

He even testified at the trial. Her grandmother made up stories that he had burned little Gloria with cigarettes, wanted her to learn German, and be sent to boarding school. The grandmother was very anti-German AND he basically had no money until his father passed and he took over the title. He had a castle, servants, land, but not much 'cash'. Had he had cash, I'm sure the grandmother would have been just fine with him.
