Fascinating - and the term 'pessary' instead of 'diaphragm' is interesting. I associate 'pessary' with devices holding prolapses in place. The idea of washable condoms is indeed green, yet it would take dedication of the highest kind to keep on um, washing them out.

Diaphragms are called "pessar" in Danish too, so here a similar word is still used.

My Danish heritage thanks you - I'll add the word to the very few bits of Danish my Gran passed on to me. Something like "Godferstausen!" is really the only clear one.

This reminds me of the TV show Lovejoy, where he's doing antique evaluations and someone brings in an old Georgian leather coin purse that was handed down through the family - except it was actually a vintage condom....
