Mark Bagley won the penciling contest, and went on to a highly successful career at Marvel doing notable runs on Amazing Spider-Man, Thunderbolts, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four

Ive also tried looking for other pros who submitted an entry and didnt win, but still went on to success in the industry

I dont believe so. I know this is how Mark Bagley got his big break, and I know Rob Liefeld's first major work was DC's Hawk and Dove, but I dont know of any other famous names who submitted a try out book and also went on to comic book fame (off hand, anyway)
