Tales from the Gimli Hospital

Guy Maddin's first big splash from 1989 (but of course like most of his films, looks like an old silent film or early talky.) Set in the Icelandic settlement of Gimli, Manitoba. Similar to Eraserhead in style.
Very comedic but one could easily watch it and not get that it's a comedy., the style is so strange and dark.
My favourite part is where the ( Read more... )

okay, i approved your post even though the embed code isn't working....i believe it is because of something with the lj-cut tag......it looks like you were using rich text editor, is that correct??? since this has been a journey for us and you have been very patient and i appreciate that, you have my permission to REMOVE the lj-cut on your post-----this is only due to circumstances here......since it seems you are using rich text editor i don't want to tell you how to correct the html code as i don't wish to confuse you.....

in the meantime....here's the clip.....

Maddin rules! I have an actress friend who lives in Winnipeg, and it drives me up the wall when she talks about working on some of his films.

And Careful is my fave.

Yeah, he's great. I have a friend who was in Careful. He says it was so casual working on his films. They were shooting in a warehouse in the summer and it got so hot that the sprinkler system went off. Maddin just calmly said to pay everybody and come back the next day. Not freaking out or anything.

Winnipeg is so neat in that they are big enough and cultured enough for cool things to happen but are far from other big cities and the pace of life is slow enough that they get to develop a really neat culture.

Somehow I'd never heard of him before. The movie sounds really interesting. Thanks!

You're welcome. He's one of Canada's top filmmakers now and his style is really cool. They look like old silent movies. He shoots using super 8 and 16mm, lights it and has costuming and acting that suits the era.

I remember when Archangel played on CBC TV one night. The next day at work people were talking about this "weird silent movie on TV last night. I didn't know they made movies that weird back then."

Some of his shorts are online. I love this one:
