Tan Hong Ming - This boy made me smile.

Yoohoo boys,

Attended a 5-hour Film Literacy workshop this morning,
presented by Prof Tan Bee Thiam (kinda cute looking lecturer), from NTU I think.

Anyway this was organised by the Asian Film Archive.
Pretty insightful stuff in my humble opinion.
Picked up several teaching tips,
which I have to share with my dept next term.

The highlight of the workshop, however,
was the special appearance of filmmaker Yasmine Ahmad from M'sia.
She seems like a delightful and funny person,
really found her likable.

Her punchline came when she simply stared at the whiteboard,
which was previously filled with film analysis notes,
and she gave an astonished look
as she described her philosophy of filming from the heart
rather from the mind.

She found it sad that Monsters Inc was not given the Best Picture Oscar
the year when Gladiator took home the trophy.
And she cried like a baby during the ending scene of the cartoon.
I used to be like her;
I used to enjoy films that make me laugh and cry hard,
until film studies got in the way of seeing films with my heart.

I want to be touched by a film again;
shall find time to catch Departures.

In the meantime, here's a really nice and simple TV ad
made by Yasmine herself,
that really made me smile.
Such a powerful message in a tiny package.
