Hardcore PC gamers are weird people.
They spend thousands of dollars on building and constantly upgrading their PC's, but for what end? So they can get a few more frames per second while running Max Payne 2?
To me, it's just not worth keeping up with the computer curve. There are people out there that are performance freaks... like their computer is a souped-up rice rocket or something. They even get neon lights and custom cases/paneling. That's sickening. Why would someone spend money on capricious bullshit like that?
Functionality is one thing, but you don't need two 200-gig hard drives, a gig of RAM, the newest video card, and the fastest processor on the market. What's the incentive? Stuffing a bunch of expensive crap into a box so you can be the envy of all your faceless internet pals?
Don't get me wrong, I love gaming. However, I don't see why people would dump thousands into building a dream machine when they could spend the same (or less) on a nice TV, surround sound system, video game system, and games. Then you can lay back on your couch, scratch your balls and veg out 'till your heart's content... and it would be a more worthwhile and versatile investment!
The fact of the matter is, unless you're doing 3D Graphic modelling or you're just a gamer, you don't need a bad-ass machine. 800 mHz w/ 256 megs of RAM is the most anyone would ever need for normal, everyday use.
PC components are just one of many things that people blow their money on and I've never quite understood why.
