Computer Update

Well, FINALLY got my 24 pin power supply tester. Hooked it up, at first everything lit up and was okay, which made my heart sink, indicating bigger (and more expensive) parts were to blame. Then there was a short yelp of the alarm, and nothing, then one of the indicator lights flickered off along with the alarm for a second, then nothing.... then BAM, one of the lights turns off completely, the alarm stays on, then another light turns off... then another, and finally the unit shuts off.

So I go and check to process an RMA with where I bought it from... no dice, I'm TWO DAYS past the thirty day mark. GAH!

(Sorry, forgot to Cut this)

So I go to the manufactureres website, print out their RMA form, fill it out -- now mind you, NO WHERE does it say "include a copy of your invoice/receipt at this time". So I fax it over to them, about ten minutes before their office closes. A few minutes later, I get the fax back, with a handwritten "Please resend with a copy of invoice."

Great. So I go and get that, and fax both things back to them... two minutes after office hours. *Sigh*

So I get home today, to see that no fax has arrived. Odd. I check my caller ID. They've called. So I call them back, get to the RMA department, then get transfered to the tech department. Here's this fun little conversation.

Him: "We left message for you. We have more questions."

Me: "Well, you couldn't have left a message, because my answering machine doesn't have a tape in it right now, but I saw you called on the caller ID."

Him: "Oh... well, you say, you tested power supply with power supply tester?"

Me: "Yeah, after it was in my system for about a week and died."

Him: "And what did power supply tester say?"

Me: "Well, it tests the +5, -5..."

He interrupts, smugly: "Ohh, let me stop you. The 700 watt unit is 2.0 ATX. Most advanced unit we have. It has no -5v line..."

So I interupt right back, a little pointedly: "That's fine and dandy, but that doesn't explain why the PG -- which is power ground -- failed, followed a few seconds later by the +12v, then everything else, and then the unit shuts off."

There's a long pause.

Him, in a far more appropriate tone: "oh. Yes, that is very bad. I will send you back to RMA to get your RMA number so we can replace the unit for you right away!"

Me: "Thanks."

And he did, and I got my RMA #. Probably going to send it out to them 2nd day air tomorrow, I want it to get there by Friday, the sooner I get my system back up, the happier I'll be.
