It's fun to cook things.
Today I made some stir-fry thing with ground beef and brown rice with various vegetables and chinese cooking oils. All that good stuff. I'm too lazy to open up the cookbook to actually tell you what it was called or anything right now. Anyway, I used half of a regular onion since I didn't have any green onions. It was not a good substitution, but then, I REALLY like green onions in my food. Oh well. I had to use up my other vegetables. They were getting old. So I experimented. That's the one thing I don't like about planning out meals. I'm always racing against the biological clock of my produce items. I should probably just go with frozen whenever possible.
Overall, the dish was not very good. If I were to make it again I would definitely make sure to use green onions, and I would use either pork or ground turkey instead of ground beef. I had a feeling when I was looking at the recipe that ground beef in a chinese recipe would taste weird, and indeed it did. But not so weird that I won't eat the leftovers tomorrow, so eh...
Also, I undercooked the rice slightly because I misjudged my timing on the stir-fry. But this is how one learns to make meals for himself, I suppose.
Tomorrow I think I'm just going to make some chicken parmesan. I made it a couple weeks ago and it turned out very well. And if I make a whole package of chicken then I will have enough chicken parmesan for three dinners. How efficient.
I haven't made anything with seafood yet. I love seafood, but I'm still a little intimidated by the idea of cooking fish. Also, I'm wary of the broiler. Has anyone ever used a broiler? Something about the food sliding in below the oven does not sit well with me.
I've decided to make something with pumpkin this weekend. Tis the season, and I LOVE anything with pumpkin. Perhaps a good old fashioned pumpkin pie. Maybe I'll really be adventurous and use a real pumpkin instead of buying the stuff in a can. I dunno though. Perhaps. I've heard it tastes better.
Or maybe that recipe my aunt gave me for African peanut soup. That has pumpkin if I recall, or maybe it was squash. Either way it is delicious. I am excited. Fall is my favorite season for home-cooked meals and for just about every other thing too. It's simply fantastic.
I need to remember to ask for a Wok for Christmas. I like to stir-fry, but I really need a bigger cooking surface for it. My frying pan isn't really cutting it.
Sorry for this entry. It doesn't really have point. Just me typing random gobbledy-goop. But then. that's pretty par for the course for me.
