Okay, what happened?

So this happens to me sometimes and makes me hate using messenger software:

Me: blablablabliggitybla
Them: blablahasdbbblaa
Me: blblblbalalalalalba
Them: blalbalaba i'm going out soon
Me: oh ok.
Me: blablalblablalba
Me: blblalaalalalalal
Me: blablalbablblaa?
...
...
Them: 'logs out'

Is it really common for people to say "I've gotta do ____ soon." and it be a reasonable substitute for goodbye? I have a few friends who do this to me on a semi-regular basis (one just stops talking altogether without any kind of "the conversation will be ending shortly" indicative language). Most of the time when someone says that, I ask if they have to head out, but sometimes I just think they're mentioning it and will say goodbye. So does that mean I have to ask for clarity every single time? Because I'll do that, but...'sigh'. Damn it, I'm friggin 30. I know I may have something extra going on to make this harder to figure out, but it doesn't make it anything less frustrating that I don't know about this by now.
