Giving his best profile... We think he's a boxer/pit mix

Chris and I have been thinking about getting another dog for a while, especially since we moved into the new place and it says we can have two animals. We've gone by some shelters but we weren't really serious until a few weeks ago. Chris wanted a pit mix preferably and we were hoping for a female. The first puppy we were really interested in at West Suburban Humane Society was a 6 month old pit mix they called Violet. We took Riley in for a meet and greet and he flipped. At first we figured it was just the stress of the shelter but even after he had calmed down and we could walk around Violet he'd stop, stare at her and growl. So that was a no go.
We'd both been looking at a lot of shelter websites and Chris saw that TLC Animal Shelter in Homer Glen had some 8 week old boxer mix puppies coming in on July 2nd. I called on the 2nd and I got a rushed response that those puppies were in but they were fighting a cold so they wouldn't be adopting them out til around the 7th. Since Chris and I were both off on the 3rd anyway, Chris convinced me to go by TLC because maybe we could just take a look at the puppies. We got to TLC and were told that "All of those puppies had been adopted out." WTF?!? I looked in one of the kennels and there was one puppy in it and when we asked about him we were told "Oh he must be the last one, sorry." We interacted with him a bit and decided to take a chance. A puppy that young Riley had already played with the week before at our housewarming party. Chris' cousing Jason had brought their 8 week old chocolate lab to the house and Riley had gotten along great other than we had to tell him not to hump Izzy.
The weird thing about the whole adoption process at TLC was that we were in the shelter for maybe 15-20 minutes max. We paid $125 and a $25 spay/neuter deposit. The only paperwork we filled out was one form that said the puppy had been transferred to the shelter from somewhere else so they might not of had time to examine it. The other was a form that said we agree to care for all of the animal's needs and we filled out our address. Quick and easy right? But here's the thing, it actually made me a little uncomfortable how easy it was. Most shelters make you fill out a 1-2 page application and ask you detailed questions. All of which I think is a GOOD thing. The other thing was that it wasn't until we looked at the second form that we found out that the puppy was only 5 weeks old. Technically puppies aren't supposed to be away from the mother until 6-7 weeks.
We decided to name the puppy Jackson, with Michael Jackson in the news everywhere I'd been playing with the idea of the name Jackson as a first name no matter what the sex of the dog we got. If it was a female we'd just call her Jackie maybe. Since Riley had a middle name we were trying to think of a name that worked with Jackson. At first we were thinking Jett maybe, then Hope suggested Jasper (from Twilight *sigh*). However, the mention of that made me think of the name Emmett. Jackson Emmett rolls of the tongue pretty good just like Riley Miles.
Jackson has been with us a week and things are going pretty good. On the 4th of July we took Jackson with us to see the fireworks in Oak Forest. He was up for a bit when we first got there, fell asleep right beore the fireworks started and slept up until the finale, at the finale he started awake like "I'm up I'm up!" and then promptly fell right back to sleep. We gave Riley a sedative for the fireworks and he really mellowed out by the time we got back to my in-laws.
Riley was pretty wary of Jackson at first but he's started to warm up to him. They are playing together now, though we have to watch Riley to make sure he doesn't get too rough. They still really aren't going to be allowed to have unsupervised play until Jackson gets a bit bigger and they both get a little bit more time together.
Jackson has a bit of an attitude, he has a tendency to growl and snarl a lot when he's picked up or petted. I'm struggling with how to deal with that b/c how do you discipline or train a 5 week old puppy? I definitely need to nip it in the bud because that is not going to be acceptable when he's 50-60 lbs. On Monday we go to get Jackson on the Wellness plan at Banfield and get his shots started up.
