Do you ever wonder why we never meet Batman in Smallville? (Spoiler deterrent: If we do later, and I don't know, don't tell me.) Now, the answer everyone knows about is, of course, the issue of licencing and other such business. But it's little-known that even though we never saw it on screen, there's a perfectly sound explanation within the story of the series itself as to why there is simply no Batman in the Smallville Universe...
EXT. ALLEYWAY. NIGHT.
(Common thug JOE CHILL is here, peering into the street, his gun at the ready.)
(CAPTION: GOTHAM CITY - 1989)
CHILL: All right!
(Out of a nearby theatre and into the street, come Gotham's WAYNE FAMILY - THOMAS, MARTHA and their young son BRUCE. They are dressed in eveningwear, as befits a trip to the cinema.)
CHILL: There's Thomas Wayne! He's rich! I'm gonna tell him to hand over his wallet or I'll shoot him and his wife!
(He spots something over head and looks up.)
CHILL: Hey, is that a meteor shower?
(He watches the lights in the sky for a few seconds, then looks back into the street.)
(The Waynes have walked past and are long gone.)
CHILL: Dammit!
