OK, so here's what's going on in my life.
There are three major things looming on my horizon: one personal, one familial, and one professional. One the personal side, I've been on a medically supervised weight management program for four weeks now. I decided to head to the doctor this January, and I discovered that I had hit three bills - it was something of a wake-up call. The doctor told me they had this program through the hospital that was a complete meal replacement liquid diet, and I was like, "ok, sign me up." I figured that's what I really needed - no decisions, no counting calories, just mixing shakes and not worry about it. So, I started - turns out you not only eat shakes, but they have snack bars and entrees, as well. I have to say, it's an amazing program. I can't believe there are people out there who spend all kinds of money on crazy pharmaceuticals that do god-knows-what to their systems, when there are simple, effective programs out there like this one. Sure, it hasn't been easy - I've had to go to restaurants with friends and watch them eat things that I love, like french fries, pizza, etc. - but the results have come quickly. In four weeks, I've lost over 25 pounds, and I still have 9 more weeks to go. I've lost five belt notches, my clothes now actually fit me, and I feel a lot better about myself.
On the familial front, my daughter Hanna is turning three next month, and we're planning a pirate-themed party. I wanted to have it at Goleta Beach, where I have had many birthday parties of my own, but my wife Leesa was freaked out about having twelve three-year-olds near the ocean. She wasn't really around the ocean as a child, so she has sort of a warped idea of the danger involved. I tried to explain to her that it isn't like a pool, where a kid can fall in and instantly be in five feet of water. Generally little kids at the beach play in the sand, they scamper in the waves a bit, but they don't just head out into the water generally and if they do, you've got time to spot them and haul them back in before they're in any real danger. So, it's something of an ongoing discussion.
Professionally I have a huge opportunity before me, and I think it should happen if I don't screw things up. The Marjorie Luke Theater (
www.luketheatre.com) is looking for a new General Manager, and the job fits my skill set almost exactly. If it were a producing organization, it would be pretty much my dream job, but it's still really close, and something I could do for years and years and be completely happy. I've received great recs, from what I hear the board was impressed with my resume, and my interview is on Tuesday, the 17th. RIght now the only problem I see is juggling this potential job with my seasonal work as a fair entertainer - they money is incredible, and the freedom offered is something I'm not looking forward to having to give up. I'm already committed to doing the San Diego County Fair, which takes me out of town from June 8th-July 4th, and there's a fair possibility that I might get the L.A. County Fair, as well - which would normally be quite the bonanza for me (around 12k), but I'm sort of hoping I don't get it, because I don't think there's any chance the Luke will hire me if I've got to be gone a good portion of the time when I would otherwise be learning the ropes of the job. So, right now it feels like everything is up in the air - I'm waiting to hear about the L.A. Fair, I'm waiting to interview, and everything else (including my summer theater plans) is on hold until those two things are resolved.
So, that's what's up with me at the moment. Hopefully not too boring a read - I'll try to do something cool and interesting before the next time I make an entry.
