http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Paine#Story (canon storyline with a little headcanon to fill in the gaps)
Because Paine won't talk about anything in her life before she was a teenager, not much is known about her childhood. She grew up during the time of Sin's reign upon the land of Spira (in Final Fantasy X) and mostly raised herself. As a teenager, she came to join the Crimson Squad, an elite group of soldiers set up by the Yevon Church. Paine worked as a mission recorder for group that included herself and three others - Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal. During the final test to determine the official members of the Crimson Squad, an operation in a place called the Den of Woe, something went wrong. Everyone who went into the cave died under strange circumstances. Only Paine and her group survived. When they emerged, those who were supervising the operation attempted to execute the four of them. Somehow, they were able to escape.
The four stayed together for a while, with Paine still recording their travels. During this time, Gippal taught Paine to speak fluent Al Bhed because she believed that learning another language would help her learn and understand more about the world. When they finally decided to go their separate ways, Nooj betrayed them by shooting each of them in the back. Paine survived the attack because she wasn't shot in a critical location, but she was unable to find the other three to determine their fate. From here, she traveled by herself for a while, going nowhere in particular and keeping a low-profile.
Paine joins the Gullwings two years later, hoping that the occupation of "sphere hunting" will help her uncover the truth of what happened on that day at the Den of Woe. The memory spheres that Paine herself recorded during that mission were lost, and she hoped to find them and discover clues in the recordings that she couldn't remember from the flurry of events during that mission. Paine met Rikku and Brother quite by chance, but it seemed to be a good match from the start. Paine, who was used to interacting with men, got along with Brother and was "adopted" by Rikku into the group. Paine jokingly remarks that she always did want to fly on an airship.
Some time later, Rikku's cousin Yuna joined the Gullwings as well. The three of them traveled around Spira, seeking out the truth behind a mysterious sphere containing images of a man who looked similar to someone from Yuna's past. The three Gullwings traveled together for three months, and in that time not only uncovered the truth behind Yuna's sphere... but the reason behind the Crimson Squad's disastrous mission in the Den of Woe. Yuna, Rikku, and Paine prevent destruction of Spira by destroying a powerful weapon hidden beneath Spira's capital city, and peace is finally able to be established in the land.
During this time, Paine finally found friends in Yuna and Rikku, but not long after the conclusion of this, their greatest mission, the three went their separate ways. Paine decided to travel throughout Spira on her own, wandering.
Character Personality:
Paine is a very cynical person. She has been through her share of hardships in life and does not accept blind optimism contrary to the facts of reality. Others might see this attitude as a killjoy or just being difficult for no reason, but Paine does not see the world through rosy glasses like some do. The world is difficult and cruel, and sometimes people are not always as they present themselves. Paine's cynicism is a defence mechanism against raising her hopes and getting hurt.
Before joining the Gullwings, Paine had been betrayed twice: once by the organization she and her squad were loyal to, and secondly by a member of that squad itself-- people she called friends. Paine feels that it is naive to open up and trust anyone with intimate details about onesself. She traveled with Rikku and Yuna for quite a while before finally opening up to them and trusting them enough to actually talk about certain details of her life.
While she does not reveal much about herself, Paine also keeps rather quiet from other topics of conversation as well, revealing information and joining in a conversation only when she needs to. When she does speak, she's often curt and sarcastic. Paine is usually very straight to the point without excess wording. It's not to say that she can't have a long and meaningful dialogue, merely that she doesn't partake in such things often. She's also sensible enough to smell trouble coming a mile away. Because her time is not spent chatting about unimportant things, Paine is constantly vigilant, looking for signs of impending trouble so she can keep her teammates out of harms way (or at least give them a warning, if trouble is unavoidable).
Paine is a soldier by nature and by design. She trained particularly hard in order to keep up with the men in her squad and not be detrimental to their work. She was not required to participate actively in the fights while in the Crimson Squad, but even the battle reporter needs to be able to handle herself in case something goes wrong. Paine is tough enough to endure the rigors of combat missions and is physically strong, since her favourite weapon is a wide-bladed sword nearly as tall as she is. Paine loves a good fight and can handle her alcohol. Also as a side-effect of hanging out with the men in the Squad, Paine's developed certain physical mannerisms that are rather boyish.
One other aspect crucial to Paine's personality is her devotion to those she calls teammates (or squad mates). Paine is constantly searching for not only the truth behind the tragedy in her past... but for a place to belong, a role to fill where her particular type of quiet strength can be beneficial and wanted. She values her loyalty and the rare friendships that she can develop. Paine knows that her stoic personality won't let others close, and for that, she values those close to her even more. She learned it with the 3 men in the Crimson Squad, and then again with the Gullwings.
Character Abilities:
Paine is a competent fighter, skilled in various weaponry but especially with swords. Because she is dedicated to keeping up her skill, Paine is also physically strong from practicing with these weapons in her training. While her physical abilities are not super-human by any means, she is more physically capable than a woman her age and size. She also has much more endurance, able to both take more damage and perform for longer without tiring. These are all abilities that Paine has been building up for years.
Paine's position within the Crimson Squad as a mission recorder requires her to capture video on the recording device (a movie sphere) even under very stressful or violent conditions. With practice, she's developed steady hands and nerves of steel even in very rough environments. This also helps her maintain her focus and her cool when dealing with less life-threatening situations, such as the energetic girls of the Gullwings. It's oftentimes Paine who keeps Yuna and Rikku focused on their task at-hand, refusing to get caught up in their enthusiasm.
Because she's learned to play Blitzball (a popular sport on Spira played in a completely enclosed sphere of water), Paine can hold her breath underwater for more than 5 minutes
Character Weaknesses:
Much of Paine’s weakness lies in her very guarded personality and her unwillingness to be open with other people. She's not casually social and does not warm up to people easily. Short, sarcastic responses might be endearing to those who have the opportunity to know her, but it doesn't make her a lot of friends. It makes her seem at best aloof or stoic... or at worst, standoffish, intimidating or mean.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
Paine is a normal human being. Her physical strength is not unusual for a soldier, nor her other physical prowess. Her combat training remains with her through practice and muscle memory. So she will retain all of the abilities listed above.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
One weakness gained by her transition from Spira to Death City will be her inability, at first, to open up enough to resonate with a human Weapon. Whereas she is familiar with the physical handling of weapons, when that Weapon is attached to a real personality and something as intimate as soul wavelength, she will find herself facing a certain amount of difficulty. She will eventually adapt to it, but it will be a struggle to start.
Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.
My character is a competent fighter in search of a purpose. She’s been looking for a place to belong and for people she feels comfortable enough around to open up to. Paine is a tough nut to crack, but overall she’s a good person and a good soldier. Even if her canonmates in SC are from another point in their timeline, it will be an interesting relationship to explore from another angle. She might even discover in this wide cast someone else she can call a “friend”.
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister: In her canon, Paine (like Yuna and Rikku) was trained in a variety of combat jobs. Her first and preferred role is that of a warrior/swordsman, but her versatility and combat experience makes her an ideal candidate for Meister because she is not limited in her weapon experience. She is a fast learner when it comes to new training and is competent in her role, whatever is needed. Paine knows how to operate as a team, with each member lending their strength to the other for the success of the mission.
Meister Ability:
Soul Apathy - Their soul is unaffected by all other wavelengths, such as the madness wavelength, calming wavelength, etc.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: stoic, tough, determined, cynical, sarcastic, searching
Soul Appearance: Paine's soul resembles a
Memory Sphere (including the base) with the exception that it appears silver like the colour of her hair.
