River wished that the bride’s cousin didn’t have such clammy wandering hands. She was trying to find a way to escape when a tall man in brown pinstripe intercepted them.

“May I have this dance, River Song?”

River gladly slid into the Doctor’s gentlemanly embrace and they swept off.

“My hero. I was thinking about punching him.”

“Wandering hands?” he chuckled.

“Clammy wandering hands.”

“Ohh, bad combo.”

“I thought it would be bad form to punch the bride’s cousin.” River said as the music changed to a slower song. She leaned against him, resting her head on his chest. The Doctor sighed then gasped softly as a wave of pain ran through him.

River felt the Doctor’s left heart stutter and she looked up at his face. “Are you all right, Doctor?”

He looked into her concerned eyes, “I’m dying, River. I’m just waiting for the regeneration cycle to start.”

She released his hand and reached up to touch his face. “Oh my Love. Do you mind if we sit?”

“I’ll be alright.”

River smiled, “So you haven’t started to critize my footwear yet.”

The Doctor leaned back and looked down. “Should I start?”

Chuckling they slipped out of the hall and sat on a nearby bench. River slid her arm around him and leaned against him. He smiled as she kicked off her shoes. They sat in companionable silence, watching the people dance. River ran her hand up and down the Doctor’s back, giving his hand a squeeze whenever he winced.

A man came up to them after a while. “Professor Song, they’re asking for you to give the presentation.”

“Where is Professor Laraby?”

“Indisposed.”

River and the Doctor traded looks that clearly said what they thought of that excuse. River sighed, “Give me five minutes.” After the man moved off River scoffed, “Indisposed my foot. Do you want to go lay down in my room?” She asked as she slid her shoes back on.

He shook his head, “I need to move on.”

River stood and took his face in her hands, “Please be careful, my Love.” She gave him a kiss on the forehead before walking back into the hall.

The Doctor watched her walk off. He carefully climbed to his feet and headed down the hall that led to where he had parked the TARDIS. He had one more stop.
