One of the biggest problems with art criticism is that people assume style is chosen. For instance "Edward Munch painted his painting in such a way to convey his depression." But Munch didn't sit down at his canvas and choose one style out a million. You can't CHOOSE your style. Any artist, no matter how skillful, has their style develop. You can refine it, but your basic style is something that develops organically.

I think art crit people just assume that artists draw or paint they way they do by intellectual choice. It's such a deeply ingrained idea in art criticism.
