39. A small opening

Are people yet foolishly wandering out in the cold and snow? There is shelter and all have been warned. Perhaps it is the source of the warning you doubt. No matter. Those who insist on foolish actions will reap the results.

It might be better when the snow has piled high enough to trap people indoors, I think.

There will be less chaos, certainly. It is sometimes a shame that many rush to the aid of the utterly stupid.

Sometimes, but many times it's a good chance to see who needs aid and who is swift to provide it.

Spotting the weak to cull from the herd? There are more than a couple of them. But people become upset when the truly useless encounter difficulties.

[There's a thoughtful smile on her face.]

Certainly they're no bother, but they would be no loss either, should you find a need or a want for a kill.

The weak, and the confident. It's the latter that I prefer to fight...

[And he also smiles faintly.]

It's an interesting idea. Many are willing to brave the weather for the sake of such rescues; would they be equally willing to brave cold steel?

Mm. You make it sound as if you already have selected targets.

[She tilts her head, considering.]

If there was glory in it, with the PCD recording, I would not put it past many fools to try. But if the PCD was not... I could see a great deal bolting.

Not with any certainty... but potentially, yes. I will keep you informed, of course.

Do you think so? I see the sense in that - it's worth testing. I'll have to arrange for some bait.

((OOC: Carmen you enabler...))

I did not doubt it.

I do. Many act differently when people are watching as opposed to when no one else would know. But perhaps those who claim to be good must hide their true selves, for fear of realizing that they also are human.

A sensible fear. I cannot blame them. A man must not test his Center too hard, whether it's a real one or another world's equivalent of it.

But would one not know how strong their center is?

It never is as strong as one supposes.

It is common to overestimate ones' abilities.

Though sometimes one understimates as well.

True enough, but better the latter than the former. Guardians are brittle things.

You have always struck me as strong, but not brittle. But to ponder if you are... I shall not ask. I have seen enough on the network to be aware of what is going on. But if you wish to speak.

...

I am incomparably mighty, as Guardians go; only the Lands' Own can claim greater power, and not all of them. But I am a Guardian, still, and I also have something I trust in. And to lose that thing, or that trust, means losing all. A broken Center does not mend.

I do not doubt you have taken steps to prevent the loss of that trust, and yet... I will ask, now. Can I assist? I would not see you break, Saul.
