I just joined an icon community for small fandoms/non-mainstream/other types of icons. It was started by a friend of mine
zombie_sexpot (no that's not why I of all people got in) She let me in cause I've been working on improving my abysmal photoshop abilities and her group is apparently really that hard up for members. For those who dont know I am known for flaming / calling out Live Journal's icon makers for copyright theft. No, by taking up the hobby myself I do not feel I am being a hypocrite. I try my best to give all proper credit to the copyright owners and I don't require people link me if they use an icon I made. I also make it point to always link to official sites and provide zips of my "base" images.
Here's Zombie's Ad for her group
notohsotypical :
This community DOES NOT discriminate those of us who are icon inept,
it does not matter of the degree of your work, just that you share it.
Never feel like your work cannot be appreciated and if it isn't
appreciated other places, then bring it to the community!
Make sure to spread the word. I don't see many icons being
made for some of my favorite movies and television shows.
For the most part, we all know several large fandoms conquer
LiveJournal at this point in time. I'm ready
to poke through with all my bizarre icons.

I've also gone and opened three of my own communities. First up is one that's been up and running for months now but I am getting around to changing it from "Invite" membership to "open to all" membership rules.
agra_mort is a "vampires in news and Culture" group. No, culture DOES NOT mean TV and Movies. I mean news and sub-cultures. We do allow personal reviews of books and movies but we absolutely do not allow "twi-love" and general fan-girl mania. Take that sort of post to our affiliate;
vampirecafe .
We want to talk about the /other/ stuff. You know, the
folklore or the latest vampire killer who's up for parole
or perhaps the latest going on on that RPG or
vampire themed religion.
agra_mort Petty arguments shall not be tolerated.
All fan-art/fictions must be linked to your journal.
Posts linking to "icon communities" will be deleted.
Copyright is to be respected; Proper credit is to be
given to all news sites, authors, and film makers.

Last but certainly not least is a community I started just last night / early this morning. As many of you probably say from your friends list...
suck_the_movie is a group for the movie SUCK. Yes, thats the name of an actual movie. I tried looking for another SUCK group to join but saw none and that made me sad. So I made what I believe is the first Live Journal group dedicated to the movie.
For fans of SUCK the movie:
A rock’n’roll vampire spoof about a down and out band,
The Winners, who will do anything for a record deal.
When their disgruntled manager tells them that they
are getting “long in the tooth”, he doesn’t know that his
words are truly prophetic. During a road trip, their
humdrum image radically changes when Jennifer, the
bass player, disappears one night with a hip vampire.
She emerges with a sexually charged charisma that
drives the audiences wild.
As the band members succumb, one by one, to blood
lust, their “gimmick” launches them into the limelight.
Following an “incident” on a national radio show with
“Rock’n Roger”, they hit mega-stardom beyond their
wildest dreams. Joey, the lead singer, is haunted by
an eerie bartender, who turns out to be much more.
Meanwhile, legendary vampire hunter, Eddie Van
Helsig, is tracking them down, despite his fear of the
dark. When a veteran music producer calls them on
becoming a vampire freak show, they begin to realize
that fame is not what it’s cracked up to be.
Suck is a wild ride down a highway to hell,
where fame is it's own damnation.
