Wow! I haven't filled this thing out in ages. On top of that, I haven't been on LiveJournal that much over the summer either. Other things have become more important, I guess. So what's been going on with me? For all of those who don't know and have been wondering (ha, I bet it's not that many ( Read more... )

Congrats on the degree -- it's a big deal, and a big step up. I don't know if that's how it seems to you now, but it is!

And congrats, too, on getting a difficult, challenging, but rewarding and necessary job.

Thank you, thank you! *bows* I know it's a big step, but sometimes I get frustrated that I'm 24 and only have an Associate Degree, rather than a Bachelor's Degree and working on my Master's. It is a difficult job, but it's easier to have a smile on my face and get through the day without being too frustrated when you have great coworkers. I'm sure you feel the same way about your firefighting job.

I was 25 before I started really understanding what a huge mistake I'd made by not going to college at all. Of course, by then I'd started to figure out that my plan to be a best-selling novelist by age 21 wasn't working so well ...

I've worked many different jobs, and believe me, I understand how coworkers can effect a person -- for better or for worse!

Don't feel so bad about the novelist career! Baum didn't make it big until he was 44.

I got my Master's when I was 24, but I can't say it's been of all that much use to me. I also learned how to drive at that age, and that's been much more useful.

Wow, that's really early for a Master's. How did you get it so soon? And as to driving, that's really late. Why so late? I thought I was bad getting my license at 20.

I went right from undergraduate to graduate school, largely because I didn't particularly want to find a job. I don't know that it was the best move, but at least I was still used to school, so maybe it was easier in that respect.

As for the driving, I just didn't have the desire to do so, and I was scared to learn. I didn't really need to when I was in college anyway, since I lived on campus. It eventually got the point where I really didn't have a choice anymore, though.

Yeah, that makes sense. But I suppose trying to pay off college bills was a major hassle without a job.

I was kind of scared too. In fact, I was so resolute in high school that I would move to downtown Chicago or NYC just to be able to walk and ride the subway everywhere, and so that I would "never" have to drive in my life. Now that I have a few years of experience, I'm ok with driving and don't mind it so much. But I'm still scared to drive on the expressway during the day. I don't mind late at night when no one is on it. I get anxious about having to drive more than 55 anywhere.

Fortunately, I'd gotten the money to pay for college from my family, so I didn't have any loans to pay off afterwards. It's been quite difficult finding a job, though. My degree is in library science, but I've only been able to find part-time work in libraries.

Those darn librarians just won't retire!*g*

I'm really surprised, though. I figured libraries around the country would be desperate for employees.

Yeah, librarians do tend to keep their jobs as long as possible, which is one reason why it's hard to break into the field.

It seems like most of the jobs that are available at libraries are part-time and/or temporary. Maybe it's a budget issue. I don't know. It does seem like most libraries aren't really interested in me regardless, though.
