BLACK HISTORY....A MYSTERY?
Black history, Black history
How come it's such a mystery
Black history, Black history
It's there for you and me
Each and every February, all is revealed
Explorers, inventors, authors, army pilots
Biochemists, astronauts, don't tell me you forgot
Makes you kind of wonder why you didn't know sooner
The wealth of information about Black people
A wise African proverb puts it plainly and true
If you don't know your history your future'll be blue
Mistakes of the past will often be repeated
Then you and your kin will soon be defeated
To remedy this, the solution is simple
Learn from elders, know your history, celebrate Black people
There are some who scoff at Black History Month
Arguing, it's unfair to spotlight the Blacks
The answer though lies in history itself
All along, who had power and who lacked?
Though slavery's ended and segregation is past
Who are now written about and who're left out
Read books, search the Internet, whatever it takes
If you don't enlighten yourself you'll be left in the wake
Of whatever or whoever, decides to interpret your past
So don't be left out of discussions about reparations
A topic right now that's rocking the nation
Learn how to learn, educate yourself at last
Black History Month will no longer be needed
When long overdue credit is given
To scores of talented Black folk much overlooked,
Many whose achievements were stolen or unheeded
It's now up to us, we have the power to command
That everyone be recognized, fairly treated across the land
Black history, Black history
How come it's such a mystery?
Black history, Black history
It's there for you and me
