CHUCK IS GOD
Oh, the implications of this! I don't even know what to say, for serious. Think about it: that means that Raphael (a dangling plotline!) was protecting his Father the whole time. It means that God pointed Dean and Sam to the place where Dean found out he was the Michael sword (and brought back Castiel in time to save them). It means God likes sex orgies and liquor and Becky was the true avatar, even if she 'didn't work out' (what the hell Kripke!? D=).
Best of all, it means God is one of those purple prose writers who makes characters come back on a whim because he likes them. HEY CAS. HEY BOBBY.
anyway! *takes a deep breath*
CASTIEL SURVIVED
Well, he was exploded by Lucifer, and God(Chuck) brought him back. I thought his human panic right before that was kind of adorable. But while I appreciated that Castiel was very in-character with his whole IT'S OVER WE'RE DOOMED thing, I was still disappointed in him for being such a downer. I DID NOT NEED DOWNERS JUST THEN, CAS. D= But he was badass and molotoved Michael, and that made me happy. I need fic about the convo between Castiel and Bobby about going after Dean. I'll be writing that shortly, actually-! AND THEN CASTIEL CAME BACK ALL MOJO'D AGAIN AND HE'S GONNA FIX HEAVEN. I think that's awesome. I know a lot of people are mad, but in the end, Castiel finally shouldered the free will that's been smacked in his face all this time. Just - yes. I liked that a lot.
Sam and Dean - wow. I just - look. More progress was made in this ONE EPISODE in their relationship than has been made for like three whole seasons. It was the Impala and Dean offering comfort that allowed Sam to overcome Lucifer - but Dean let Sam grow up, and then he finally - FINALLY - broke the self-sacrifice routine. (HE WENT BACK TO LISA ♥ ♥ ♥) That. Is. Incredible. And Sam took responsibility for his actions.
Lucifer and Michael's conversation was great - it was like, 'here is what Seasons 1&2 could have been if Dean was a dick and Sam was an asshole - well, more than they are.' Lucifer wants to know why they have to follow Dad's orders, and Michael doesn't see any other options. It's Sam&Dean in black and white, starkly painted, and what I like was that Lucifer's (Sam's) position was far more sympathetic. And then they both were thrown into hell by Sam, which was, dammit all, the perfect redemption and I just don't even know.
On a final note, the Impala/Winchesters montages were all just awesome. They had me convinced the Impala was going to be the character that 'died' (turned out to be Adam, I think), but they were really very beautiful.
'Carry On My Wayward Son' is a great song.
