Onions (1/?)

A year ago, I started a Kaito/Conan fanfic. Now I want to re-write it.

Onions
DC/MK fanfic - Kaito + Shinichi

Summary: Kid has an odd way of showing appreciation. This is a rewrite of an older fic that loosely played in jheen's universe, but it's even more further removed now.

ickaimp, this is for you.

The university librarians were charmed.

The boy was young, probably a pre-teen, and all gangly limbs, stretched out thinly as if he were actually outgrowing his skin. His black hair was almost tamed against his head, but stuck up stubbornly from the crown of his head; he wore wire-rimmed glasses with the air of pride that came with a brand-new pair.

He came once a week with an armload of books to return, and left with another armful of books to read. The reading material? It ranged from medical histories and texts to criminology and law - and the occasional murder mystery. He was always polite, well-dressed, and quiet in the stacks.

He was also always alone.

Shinichi shifted the stack of books in his arms and managed to fit the key in the lock of his apartment. Once inside he toed off his shoes and thumped the books down on the lone table, looking around. Everything was just as he'd left it; neat and orderly, except for the table itself, which was covered with papers. Notes were scribbled across the files and pages in several handwritings, but most notably Conan's; several books that Conan had purchased lay open and marked all along the edges. The waning sunlight slanted across the pages.

He lived on the other side of town now, far enough from Beika that no excuse could take him by his old house or the Mouri Detective Agency. Ran thought that 'Conan' had moved back in with his parents - in America. Shinichi did nothing to discourage that belief. After all, he'd moved away for two very good reasons, and a third that wasn't nearly as good.

Shinichi started into the kitchen with one of the medical books under his arm. He thought he'd found an interesting cross-reference to apoptosis that might have a relation to Apotoxin ...

The window was open.

Shinichi blinked, then narrowed his eyes. It was just a crack, but he certainly hadn't left it that way. His eyes swept the room immediately for anything out of place, and his eyes lit on the refridgerator door.

An envelope was pinned there with a four-leaf clover magnet, between the shopping list and a cherished picture of 'Shinichi-niisan' with Ran at a summer festival.

Shinichi didn't own a four-leaf clover magnet.

Detective instincts kicked in. Shinichi started to reach for his handkerchief before laughing at himself. There was only one person who would leave an envelope with a four-leaf clover, and that person would never be so careless as to leave fingerprints.

Besides, he'd left more than that last time - although not by choice.

Shinichi plucked down the envelope barehanded and tore it open to find two letters inside. He flipped them both open. Was that his heartrate picking up? Shinichi tried to command himself to relax as he read the first sheet.

Detective:

You've been missed, so I thought I would invite you back.

-KID

The signature charactiture accompanied the signature. Shinichi flipped over the paper, but there was nothing else on it. He turned his attention to the second sheet.

When a whole is halved, a white bird will fly.

In a place thrice exceeded, a forgotten voice sings, surrounded by tears and good luck.

Before the half is whole, a white bird will flee.

-KID

A heist note. The Kaitou Kid had left Shinichi with a heist note.

And Shinichi could only laugh aloud.

tbc

HAHAHA. I think the note might ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING, too, wooooo~

also, older conan, whee.
