So I think I'm going back to school.
I'll wait while everyone either picks their chins up off the floor or stops rolling their eyes thinking 'uh, huh, whatever.'
You may or may not know that I have an Education Award from my AmeriCorps service. You may or may not know I couldn't use it to pay for Queens because I didn't read all the fine print, got my money together in a rush and used my loan to pay a lump sum because I didn't read the fine print. You may or may not also know that thanks to the same crap (ie, me not reading the fine print), I can't use it to pay off said load for Queens.
Now that you're caught up, I have this money. And since time flies when you're sitting on your arse waiting for your life to start, I have to use it by next August or it goes away, never to be seen or heard from again.
So months ago I found
this program and wrote it off as something I a) wouldn't be accepted for, b) would fail miserably at, and/or c) would not be helped one bit, career wise. The only plus is that I think it would be at least as fun as an MFA in Writing (with a much more flexible schedule), because I'm that much of a geek. I mean, the three required courses are 'Global Trends in International Migration,' 'Labor Migration: Permanent Settlers, Temporary Workers, and Unauthorized Migrants,' and 'Refugees and Displaced Persons.' (And then three of the following: 'Human Trafficking,' 'Migration and Development,' 'Migration and Security,' 'Newcomers to Citizens: Immigrant Integration,' or 'US Immigration: Past, Present and Future.')
Anyway, like I said, I wrote it off in March. So we were putzing at Starbucks today and I checked it out again. Turns out there are no actual admission requirements anymore (aside from a BA and either experience or an advanced degree - I have both) and I can swing 3-4 of the 6 classes (including materials) with my Ed Award. Still firming up details, but I was describing this to Jess today and she started to smile at how animated I was and excited and all that; we haven't really talked a lot about what I want to do, what my 'mission statement' is, but she knows enough to get a kick out of my reaction.
So, I'm waiting for more details, but I think I'm going to go for it. It's at Georgetown, each class is some distance stuff and 3-4 day courses (all day) and I have 2 years to take 6 of them. I think even I can manage that. Anyway, it would get and keep me up to speed, it would introduce me to people who do the work I want to do, it would put my money to good use, it would be fun and just generally awesome.
So that's my coolness for the day. (I did stop by and do all the paperwork for the other library job, but as it's the same one I interviewed for last summer, though in a different branch, I'm not sure of my chances. I have no idea why I wasn't selected, so I will assume the same thing will happen - I will get called for an interview, I will interview well and I will not get the job. Life will go on and I will slog away until it doesn't, for whatever reason.)
