Hurricane Katrina

Like so many others, I am now a refugee. I am fortunate, however, I am housed in nice accomodations with electricity, cable, and hot food. Others, as I am sure you are aware, are not so fortunate. We turn on the tv and see the images of suffering in New Orleans, we see the destroyed homes and casinos along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It's awful! What I am sure you do not see, are my people: the members of my community in Bayou La Batre, alabama. Of the 2300 residents, more than 2000 are now homeless. People are camping in their front yards. There are no water or sewer services, debris litters the streets. My students at both the middle and high schools are in crisis. Please, when you spare a prayer or kind thought to those suffering in New Orleans, Biloxi, Gulf Port, Pascagouls, etc. remember the people in Bayou La Batre, Grand Bay, Coden, Alabama Port, and Dauphin Island. These people lost everything as well. A storm surge of over 18 feet wiped out everthing many of these people owned. Their lives and livelihoods have been destroyed. PLEASE REMEMBER THEM!!

My family and I are safe.
