So far this year, I have finished reading Red Seas under Red Skies, The Gormenghast Trilogy and the Chronicles of Amber. Only 14 books is far less than usual, but Gormenghast was incredibly dense, and took many months to finish.
Red Seas under Red Skies was a really good book, and I am eagerly anticipating the prequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora out later this year.
Gormenghast...was heavy, brooding, trippy, distracting, difficult, inspirational (to more people than me, seeing as Merlin decided to call the Keep of the Four Worlds Gormenghast as he first spied it...) and fun, even though it was long-winded. I think Mervyn Peake manages to get the reader to feel what it is like to be Titus, drowning in rituals and dusty, old things. Also, while Steerpike was the only smart one there, I did not like him, as he was a tad too...detached. The last book was the most surreal, even though it was more grounded in reality than the other two. It is a pity and a relief that there are no more, though.
The Chronicles of Amber was a lot of fun, although most lay in the first half. The other half, as both Spike and Éowyn pointed out, was not half as good. The writing was awful in certain places, but mostly I could stand it. I also rushed through the last few books as soon as I had Toll the Hounds in my hands, and now I am finally done with it. Oh well, nothing but to wish Corwin luck.
Now, I am off to bed after a cup of tea, so that I can start reading Toll the Hounds, which is book 8 in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. Hurry up, damn Americans, and release them faster! I want the last two books now!
Oh yeah, work tomorrow, reinstalling Windows XP on the laptop, picking up brother from train station, as he will come home tomorrow, for a grand total of a day or two...then host computer party.
