Okay, so it's true that I don't really like little kids, but this morning I was genuinely amazed.
My youngest step-brother Adam and I were sitting in the living room and I was playing with his rear wheel drive RC truck. I made it do some donuts on the hardwood floors, and he noticed that one of the tires (the front, inside tire) was barely spinning at all. So, figuring that I'd attempt to teach him some physics, I asked him if he knew why that was the case.
At first he told me he didn't know why, but then, "Wait -- I know." He then proceeded to explain to me that the inside wheel has to spin slower in a turn, and since the turn was so tight, the wheel hardly needed to spin at all. Not that difficult of a concept, actually...except that he's 5 years old.
I'm a pretty smart guy, but I'm pretty sure I didn't have that sort of logical reasoning ability, or a decent understanding of mechanics of motion at 5. And it's not like he knew all the right terms to use (so it took him a while to explain), but the fact that he was able to get to the right conclusion...I was practically sitting there with my mouth wide open as he explained this to me -- with rather cute five-year-old speech patterns.
Yeah...I still don't really like kids. But, to be sure, that was a nice moment.
