Humanity has invented how to take pleasure from sound since time it was apelike. And all it's history music comes with nations in spite of wars, disasters and epidemics.
I've never thought much about the reason of people's sympathy to different kinds of music. In childhood i wished I’d taken up a musical instrument, but i've always been a bit tone deaf. And now reflecting to this i'm convinced that yougers just want to be a part of some social tribes they used to know from parents or peers. It's one of the ways not to feel lonely and attempt to identify themself in a difficult period of matureness.
Moreover people are able to feel empathy and mood of various melodies and tune their mood to it. Live performance sounds more exciting, but recorded version is commonly clearly in sound. Some kind of music can make person feel close himself to the text of song, other makes believe in happy end some just direct thoughts on the way you want.
Besides I guess that favorite melodies are connected to our memories and associates with some moments of our lifes or emotions we felt when listened to it. It could be a successful date, cheerful party or just important minute. And by rehearing this song you could carry away fron reality and return in past.
To sum up there are a lot of hypothesis why most people are keen on music, but in fact nobody knows the cause why some type of wave oscillations can influence on our mind and mood.
