Well, we got off to an excellent start in the
first week, with 1,194 words of the story so far, collectively written by
liminalliz,
likeadiamond,
nicole9514, and (myself)
ishara.
The story has only just begun though, and in order to go on, it needs
you to contribute. So come play with us, add something to the story. You might want to
track the comments to this post, so that when new comments are added, you'll be notified, giving you a chance to respond to them.
C'mon, it'll be fun.... :)
The rules:
This is community writing project. The idea is to take turns writing the story. Beginning in the original post, with the story continuing in the comments, first story comment responds to the text in the original post, second comment responds to the first comment, third to the second, etc.
Story responses can be as short as one paragraph, or as long as three paragraphs.
Please use a spell checker on any responses before posting them.
There is no specified posting order, so it's a case of first in, best dressed- if multiple people respond to one comment at the same time, the person whose comment posted first stays, others should be removed by those who wrote them, and if possible, adapted to respond to the last comment.
Responses should not directly contradict anything that has been previously written.
If you’re segueing into a new scene, please indicate you’re doing so by posting a line that consists only of a *** in the appropriate spot.
The story which forms belongs to no one person, but to all who participate,as it is the sum of all its parts, the individual parts belong to those who wrote them.
If the responses start to slide off the screen, feel free to start a fresh thread, just make sure you make a link from the old thread to the fresh thread, and vice versa.
Any OOC / non-story comments should be made in a fresh unlinked thread.
Every week, the story so far will be reposted in its entirety to a fresh post, with credit given to all participants, and provided the story hasn't already reached a natural conclusion, the story may continue in the comments the new post.
The story so far...
Max leaned forward in her seat as she maneuvered the Ninja through Seattle's rain slicked back streets, cold damp wind tangling her hair. She hit the gas, putting on a burst of speed. She was going a little over the limit, but there was no one around the darkened streets, least of all cops, not in this neighbourhood. Anyway, she reasoned, Logan had said it was important, even if he hadn't given her any details. She took the next right, then cruised to a halt when she found the building she was looking for. Cutting the engine, she slid from the bike and slipped into the deep shadows where Logan waited.
"Hey Logan," she murmured quietly, the curious look she gave him lost to the darkness, "What's the dealio? Why all the cloak'n'dagger?"
"Hush," he murmured, reaching out to grab her arm and pull her closer. She sucked in a breath as she fought an aggressive reaction at his touch as a man's hand gripping her arm in the dark wasn't top on her list of good times. But it was Logan. She trusted him, right?
"Let me guess, you found a juicy lead and needed some muscle?" she whispered, leaning into him. "Or were you just lonely on the stakeout?"
"I actually need you for your brains tonight," he replied, and she could sense the smile growing on his face.
"Really?" she said, a smile playing across her own features. "You don't usually use me for my mind."
It was dark, too dark for someone without enhanced abilities to see, almost too dark for her to see, but she saw him raise an eyebrow and try to hide an amused smirk at the term she'd used. He looked as if he wanted to say something about the term she'd used to describe their relationship, but instead reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out an earpiece and a computer disc. He handed the earpiece and disc to her before reaching into an inside pocket to pull out a set of plans before he spoke again, his voice soft and low.
"I need you to plant this in the mayor's computer," he said, and her confusion grew stronger as she looked around the area, having figured that the mayor's office would be in a much nicer area than this.
"He's smart - always careful to keep his criminal activities well and truly separate from his official work. That's his base of operations down there," Logan nodded toward a warehouse further down the block, then stepped deeper into alleyway, the exoskeleton giving a quiet mechanical whirr as he moved. He spread out the plans on the hood of his Aztek, clicking on a penlight so Max could look over the blueprints, "The first floor has some pretty high-tech security with all the bells and whistles. There's also a man stationed down there.Your best bet is probably to get in up here." He pointed to a window on the upper story at the back of the warehouse. "That won't be a problem, will it?"
"Please. I got into your place, didn't I?" Max smirked slightly as she slipped in the earpiece he'd given her, "This little bit of second story work will be a piece of cake in comparison. So I find the office and plant the disk in his computer. Anything else?"
"I'll need you to install the program on the computer, and set his firewall to allow the program complete connectivity." Logan reached into his pocket again, withdrawing a zip-lock bag containing a few tiny devices,"And If you get a chance, plant these bugs and pinhole camera..."
"What in the world did you do without me, Cale?" she said, interrupting as she carefully took each item from his hands.
He sighed over dramatically and teasingly answered, "Cry into my pillow and hold out for a genetically enhanced super heroine to save the day."
"More like do your dirty work," she replied, her tone smug. "Any other instructions, boss?"
He took her face in his hands and kissed her, much to her surprise. When they pulled apart, he smiled in amusement at her more or less shocked expression, then brushed back a curl of her hair from her face.
"Be careful."
"Always am," she replied, returning his smile before slipping into the dark to find the best way to go up and in.
She could still feel the press of his lips against hers, and her skin seemed to tingle where his knuckle had tenderly brushed her cheek. His kiss had tasted like a promise...
Get your head in the game, girl. Max reminded herself, stopping back at the Ninja to retrieve her set of lock-picks, a
Leatherman, and a six inch crowbar she kept in the compartment under the seat. Equipt now, she headed for the alleyway that ran along the back of the warehouse.
She found the window and crouched down, hearing Logan's voice in her ear as she sprang into the air, "Okay, comm system should be on-line, can you hear me, Max?" Her fingers caught hold of a drainpipe that ran along the side of the building, and she pulled herself up onto it before responding, "Yeah, I gotcha Logan. I'm heading in, now." Perching precariously, she leaned sideways to peer in the window...
She could feel her adrenaline pulsing through her bloodstream, giving her a high that nothing else could beat. Her mind strayed back to that too short kiss and she smiled. "Well, almost nothing."
"What was that?" Logan's concerned voice brought her back to the job at hand. Those type of thoughts would have to wait till this job was finished.
"I was just saying I want to get this job over with quickly."
"Really?" His voice sounded playful. "You got better things you could be doing?"
She smirked even though Max knew he couldn't see her. "Maybe."
"I know the feeling. But Max," his voice took on that sweet, serious, concerned tone she knew and loved. "Remember to watch your back."
"Don't worry about me Logan. I've got a good partner to do that for me."
With that she silently opened the window and slipped inside.
She stepped lightly, her footsteps silent. She ran through the plans Logan had shown her in her mind, trying to remember where the office had been located - she knew it was on the second floor.
Her eyes picked up the glow of a computer screen coming from a room down the hall. Bingo.
"Heading towards the office now," she said to Logan, keeping her voice low, making sure to stay out of the light so she wouldn't cast a shadow.
Sidling up to the open door Max took a cautious peek around the frame, a quick scan confirming that the office was empty.
She stepped inside and approached the computer. The monitor displayed a screensaver featuring a shark swimming around eating schools of tropical fish.
"Talk about appropriate..." Max muttered under her breath as she nudged the mouse, a password prompt popping up on the screen, "Machine's passworded. I don't suppose you gotta clue for me?"
Your turn! :)
