Comics From Last week #1

Apr 14, 2011 03:11

I get my comics by mail order. Therefore, I'm always running a week behind. From now until I have to start solving systems of forces again, I'll be reviewing my stale floppies every Wednesday.

Herc #1 by Pak, Van Lente, Edwards, Hanna, and Aburtov

I loved Incredible Hercules by Pak and Van Lente, so I was cautiously looking forward to this title. I say "cautiously" because I knew Amadeus Cho wasn't going to be in it and, as I suspected, the book suffers due to his absence. The authors appear to be going for a more straightforward superhero story instead of a action-adventure buddy comedy, and while there's nothing wrong with that, I don't enjoy it nearly as much. Also, why is Hercules sleeping with some random lady? I thought he and Hebe reconciled!

Irredeemable #24 by Waid and Krause

OMG, Modeus's creepy monologue about his love for the Plutonian is definitely the highlight of this issue. Tony just needs someone who will love him unconditionally! Um, too bad for him that that person is his arch-enemy. "But what others saw as torment, I regarded as foreplay." Oh my.

I'm worried about Qubit. The overarching theme of this series is basically "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions" and I fear my favorite character is succumbing. Waid had said in interviews that Qubit is his favorite character as well and I think he may be about to kill his darling. Or at least make him...IRREDEEMABLE!

iZombie #12 by Roberson and Hernandez

If you're going to have a fill-in artist, one of the Los Bros is the way to go! This reminds me of Allred's X-Force/X-Statix where the fill-in artists were Paul Pope and Darwyn Cooke. Guy's got some serious pull.

Anyway, this issue was a pretty much a flashback to how two of the main characters met. It was pretty good, but I'm looking forward to getting back to the main storyline next month.

Madman: All-New Giant-Size Super Ginchy Special by Allred, Allred, Lenox, Kindt, and Zonjic

Hey, this is what Mike Allred was doing this month! Like most recent Madman stories, the art is the real star here. The stories were pretty slight, but cute. My favorite was Matt Kindt's tale of space Beatniks. We also learned that Emi Lenox believes that Death Cab for Cutie are too depressing to be terrestrial in origin. Amazing pin-up gallery!

Secret Six #32 by Simone and Calafiore

Catman and Etrigan go around stabbing demons together. That is all you need to know to know that this book is awesome.

Witchfinder: Lost and Gone Forever #3 by Mignola, Arcudi, Severin, and Stewart

The art is gorgeous, but I think I'll enjoy the story more once all of the issues have come out and I can read them in one sitting. I can't keep track of the plot in my head from month-to-month. I think they are finding witches.
