A New Job (Kinda) and a Rare but Pleasant Occurence!

It's been awhile since I actually posted anything resembling a journal entry about the day-to-day goings-on of my life...so I thought I'd just start now, and hopefully make it a more regular thing ( Read more... )

I hope the job works out for you and that's great that you are volunteering (I am actually in the same predicament as you right now. Horrible economy).

And I have "The Colditz Story" in my Netflix Queue. I think it's the one coming up next actually, I also started watching a lot of POW movies because of Hogan's Heroes, so I guess we are both crazy. lol. And in this case I am also a fan of John Mills. :)

Ha ha - sounds like we are both having some tough times right now...the unemployment rate in CA is just so bad. My family's moving to Texas this summer, since it's much cheaper to live there regardless of the national economic situation.

Hope you enjoy "Colditz Story"...for me, it was kind of slow moving. But there are some really definitely highlights! And yay for John Mills. I had actually never seen any of his movies until last week when I caught "Great Expectations" from 1946. Have you seen it? I enjoyed it very much, and was impressed with Mills in "Colidtz", as well. :)

Oh my goodness I ADORE Great Expectations! I had no idea anyone else had ever watched that version..everyone I've mentioned it to only knows the more recent version.

Yeah! I was lucky enough to catch it on Turner Classic Movies a week or so ago...they were doing a tribute to Jean Simmons (who recently died), and that was really her breakout role as Young Estella. I thought they did a really great version of it, even if the ending bore little resemblance to the original book (not the one Dickens later changed it to)! I really enjoyed the movie - how perfect was Alec Guiness as Herbert? :D

Alec Guiness was sooo young there! I only knew him from The Bridge On The River Kwai so it took me a while to recognize him.:D

I was adicted to TCM back when I had cable tv.:P I still miss it terribly.:P

Ha ha - yeah, he was SUPER young! I knew him from "Star Wars" first...but have seen him in a bunch things since then. He is wonderful in "Bridge on the River Kwai"!

LOL - yes, TCM is a close second to Netflix in terms of influence on my film education. Since I was 15 (about 7 years ago, I guess), I've loved the channel. Missed the heck out of it when I was at school, and am so happy to have it back!

I did see Great Expectations on TCM last week for the Jean Simmons tribute. I also saw him "In Which We Serve" which I think is a pretty good WWII propaganda film.

And on another note I need to read "Great Expectations". I had planned to read the book first and then rent the film but since the film had come on at such a great time I watched the movie first. :)

Haven't seen "In Which We Serve" - sounds like a definite addition to my list, though!

Oh, yes! Definitely read "Great Expectations" if you get the chance...it's one of my top five books of all time. If you like Dickens, of course (I know not everyone does!). Really moving and wonderful characters!

I bought the book so I definitely plan on reading it eventually. :)

And I like Dickens, although so far I've only read David Copperfield & A Tale of Twp Cities. Tale of Two Cities is my favorite of the two.

Cool! I actually haven't read David Copperfield OR Tale of Two Cities (I'm a terrible lit major, huh?). I have both of them, though...Think I will do Two Cities first! 'Course, I've also been meaning to read Austen's novels and a zillion other things...so many great stories out there!
