Averting his gaze to the tiled floor, Jaejoong closed his eyes briefly, trying to ignore the slight sting of tears prickling at the corners. At the sound of the door clicking open, Jaejoong quickly swiped the back of his hand across his eyes and glanced up, turning to see Changmin stepping into the room and shutting the door behind him.

They made eye contact for a split second before both men looked away from each other. Clearing his throat, Changmin made his way over, stopping at the foot of the bed and turning to look at Donghae.

“So I heard from the doctor that he’ll be fine,” the younger man started, voice sounding strange to his own ears.

Jaejoong risked a side glance at Changmin, noticing a small white bandage on his cheek, before the latter suddenly turned to meet his gaze. Caught, Jaejoong blinked and turned his attention to Donghae’s reposing form.

“Um… yeah.”

Both of them dropped into awkward silence, and as the seconds ticked by, the two men shuffled back and forth on their feet, stared at the floor, picked at the hem of their shirts-did anything but look at each other. After nearly a minute, Changmin turned to say something, just as Jaejoong opened his mouth to speak.

“Listen, Jae-”
“Min, there’s-”

Stopping short, they stared at each other for a brief moment before tearing their gazes away, to the floor, the wall, somewhere else. Changmin’s heart was beating hard against his chest, for a reason he couldn’t quite place, and as his gaze skimmed to the far wall, he tried to calm himself.

I need to tell him about Heechul… that’s all I need to do, just tell him and walk back out-

Suddenly, he felt a hand grab his wrist, pull; he stumbled, and the next thing he knew, his heart was skipping a beat and he found himself pressed against a warm body, strong arms encircling him. Changmin’s eyes widened in surprise for a moment before he recovered and relaxed into the embrace, hands coming up almost automatically to settle around Jaejoong’s waist and face burying into the older man’s shoulder.

As Jaejoong held him, pulled him closer without saying a word, Changmin felt a burst of warmth expel through his body, waves of nostalgia and familiarity washing over him. He knew he couldn’t move away, even if he had wanted to, and despite everything that had happened in the past forty-eight hours, he wanted to think about this-nothing but this, in his arms, against his chest. It was like a remedy, a reprieve from all the fear and insecurity that had been thrown his way, and he willingly welcomed it.

How long… has it been?

Changmin closed his eyes, pressed his nose into Jaejoong’s jacket and was greeted with the smell of narrow misses with death and danger, of conflict and desperation, of moments that lasted only seconds. But fuck, how he’s missed this, missed being close to him, feeling him, breathing him as he is, knowing that he’s here in front of him and in his arms. Fisting his hands into Jaejoong’s jacket, he pressed himself closer, wishing that the moment would keep going, that Jaejoong would never let go.

But everything had an end, he knew; even so, he couldn’t help feeling a small sense of disappointment when Jaejoong finally pulled back. Opening his eyes, Changmin met Jaejoong’s gaze, heart stopping momentarily when he saw the relief, the concern-a multitude of emotions-in the older man’s expression.

“I’m… just really, really glad you’re all right, Min.”

As Changmin struggled to figure out what to say in response, Jaejoong continued, voice steady and quiet.

“Everything was so out of control back there… and just… I’m sorry.”

“No, Jae,” Changmin finally said, lips curving upward into a soft smile, “you saved me. And besides… everyone faces danger at some point in their lives, don’t they?”

“But I don’t want you to-you don’t need to face danger. I’m supposed to protect you, keep you away from all that.”

Smiling wider, Changmin kept his eyes locked onto Jaejoong’s, his expression softening. “As long as you keep me like this, I’ll be safe… you don’t have to worry, Jae. I can take care of myself, too.”

Changmin could tell that Jaejoong was less than reassured, but he stepped closer again before the latter could say anything else, hands slipping under the older man’s jacket and around his waist. He wanted to be close, needed it-but suddenly stopped. Encountering warm moisture at Jaejoong’s side through his shirt, Changmin withdrew his hand, eyes widening when he looked down to see blood on his fingers.

A/N: I know this doesn't make up for the nearly 8-month wait you guys have waited, and for that, I am terribly sorry. So many real-life issues have been getting in the way, but I'm back into writing again.

One thing I'm hoping for is that you guys still remember this fic, that you guys don't forget it. It will finish, I promise. Tentatively, there are four more chapters left after chapter 20. I highly recommend that you refresh your memory by reading from the beginning or at least several chapters back.

Word count for this preview: 784. Word count for chapter 20: 8,119. The chapter is done and will be posted really soon.

Ah, one more thing - please be prepared for what happens between now and the end (this includes what to expect in chapter 20). Things may become particularly violent or graphic; I can't mention what, since it'll ruin the plot. But please be prepared. ^^;

Thank you for your understanding and continuous support, new and old readers combined. :) ♥

(All fics have been moved from jjigae to paperside; feel free to watch/join! **Chapters rated NC-17 are locked to the comm for explicit content; please join to view.)
