I'd walked by the door labeled Psych Office about a dozen times by now; just in passing, but I'd noticed the sign the first time. I didn't think much about it at first-- I hadn't had therapy from anything but a paintbrush in almost a year, and I didn't think I needed it much. Of course, I wasn't so in denial that I didn't know damn well that part ( Read more... )

Henry looked up from the notes he was writing when the door opened, raking his shaggy blond hair back from his face. "I am," he confirmed with a friendly smile, setting down his pen. "I'm Dr. Henry Devlin. What can I do for you?"

"Help me, I hope," I said honestly. I was a little surprised to find I was nervous; my palm was sweaty and if I'd had two hands I'd've been wringing them. "I.. uh... I'm Edgar," I said, coming further in and taking the chair across the desk from him. "Edgar Freemantle, I'm a little new here-- well not so new, a month or two, I've been here. I live down by the Hamlet with my daughter." I was starting to babble, I realized and shook my head with a little chuckle. "Sorry, this is a little awkward..." Not the first time he'd heard that one, I was sure.

"Good to meet you, Edgar," Henry said. He took note of the other man's missing arm; it made his own two missing fingers seem like nothing in comparison. "Sounds like you've been here about as long as I have. How have you been taking to the island so far?" In contrast to Edgar's nervousness, Henry was relaxed and comfortable, sitting with the inviting ease of a man people find it easy to talk to.

"Alright, I suppose. It's actually not that different from where I was before-- Duma Key, down in Florida. That's actually... kind of part of why I'm here," I said a little hesitantly. "I was in therapy before I moved to Duma, to help with-- well I guess I should start at the beginning," I interrupted myself with a rueful laugh. "If you have time to hear it now, I mean..." I had no idea if there was a procedure to this, but now I was here I wanted to sieze the moment as much as I could before I chickened out.
