Lost

After I got to my mother's and finished setting up the dvd player, I didn't, of course, immediately start watching my dvds. Actually, I only did that late in the evenings or at night, only a few times during the days, because I know my mother wouldn't be the least interested in watching the dvds I had with me. First of all, she isn't at all interested in sf, fantasy or horror, and secondly, she doesn't understand English well enough to understand tv programs, even with subtitles on. Even I usually keep the subtitles on, because it's very easy to miss some words when a lot is going on or there is some kind of background noice.

But when I had the time, the first order of business was, of course, to finish watching the first season of Lost. Been there, done that, and still as lost as ever ;-). I really liked how you slowly learned new stuff about the different people in the series through the flashbacks and how they behaved on the island.

I really liked how some of the characters were shown to be quite different from what they initially seem like, or at least some of the reasons that make them as they are. I'm speaking especially of Sawyer here (he really grows on you), but this fits most of the characters in the series from Boone to Hurley to Locke.

Another thing that really works in this series, is that both the audience and the characters are completely in the dark as to what is really going on. What is the island? What is that large thing moving in the jungle? How come there are polar bears on an island set in the Pacific ocean? etc.etc.

Of course, it doesn't hurt at all that the series has lots of eye-candy as well.... Lost should start in Finnish tv in January, but I'm glad I got the dvd box, because I think I would be a complete nervous wreck if I could see only one episode a week. One warning, btw, to people who are thinking of buying the dvds: do not read the leaflet that comes with the dvds if you want to remain unspoiled, because it gives away some important happenings in the episode descriptions!

And speaking of spoilers, there’s now a long wait before Season 2 comes out on dvd, and I'll really have to watch out that I don't spoil myself badly in a couple of LJs/websites I visit regularly, because this is one of those series that would IMO suffer quite a lot if you knew too much before seeing the eps yourself.
