Last ep of Angel + thoughts on Roswell

So Angel is now over. The last episode was aired here yesterday and I watched it tonight (if anyone hasn't seen the ep yet, here there be spoilers...!!).

The ending left me feeling sort of empty, because the open ending didn't really give me enough closure. I was feeling a bit melancholy about it ending before watching the episode, but I guess the only thing that really moved me was Wes's death. That was well done. Sigh.

The fifth season of Angel had some amazingly good episodes, but this really wasn't one of them. Pity.

This felt even more flat after having just watched two seasons of Roswell which were really good on the emotional rollercoaster aspect. I am (secretly) a full-blown romantic, and the on-and-off relationships, the angst, the forbidden/impossible love, etc. were things that I really liked about the show.

The sf aspects are pretty silly and forgettable, but they aren't really the show's main concern, since it's mostly concerned about the relationships. The common teen feelings of awkwardness and alienness maxed out because the main characters are aliens trying to fit in a world that is occasionally very dangerous and threatening and trying to cope with their human friends and relatives.

I think the first season was better than the second season, because it felt more coherent. The overall story flowed better and the balance between the main characters worked well. The second season had some not so good episodes, and some that didn't really contribute that much to the main story. I also hated Tess, but I guess that's a quite common reaction to the character :).

My favourite pairing in the show was Michael and Maria though the alot of the eps focus more on Max and Liz. There are constant sparks, and their relationship really has it's ups and downs, and the characters are so good. Both of them have a tough exterior that hides a soft interior that they very rarely show to anyone. I loved the season 2 finale where Michael finally really opens up to Maria. Awww.

Max and Liz were really sweet on season one, and there are still some really good moments on season two, though they are slowly drifting apart due to the situation and Tess's presence. Grrr. I hate Tess.
