My fridge/freezer unit broke down yesterday evening. Basically, the power switch broke: It worked fine if I pressed the button, but it just wouldn't stay down whatever I tried, so no power. This of course meant that it started warming up right away.
Luckily the days & nights are already cool enough that I could stow all perishables from the fridge on my balcony. Not so lucky with the stuff that I had in my freezer. :P Though luckily there wasn't that much, just some bread & berries & rhubarb & leftovers.
The building repair man came to check it this afternoon and changed the malfunctioning part, so now it's working - at least for now. He also said he'd put in an order for a new fridge/freezer unit, but it might take a couple of weeks for it to arrive.
Since the freezer was half-thawed anyway, I took the opportunity of fully thawing it to get rid of all the accumulated ice befor turning the unit back on and moving stuff back into it. Like I said, they were fine on my balcony and the frozen stuff was spoiled/unfreezable anyway.
I guess I'm lucky that I live in a rental apartment where the big kitchen appliances (stove, fridge) are the responsibility of the rental company. Having to pay for it all myself wouldn't have been fun at all.
I'm throwing most of the other stuff away, but I was thinking I might bake a blackcurrant pie or crumble tomorrow. And eat it with vanilla ice cream or something. Yum.
