I *finally* saw Veer Zaara (starrring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherji). I'm still a bit overwhelmed and don't really know what to say except that I LOVED the film! The emotional rollercoaster was almost as bad as Dunnett's Checkmate (though nothing really wins over that book).
Before this film, I haven't really bought into the Shahrukh-Preity chemistry. I thought Shahrukh and Saif had more chemistry than either with Preity in Kal Ho Naa Ho, not to talk about Shahrukh and Manisha in Dil Se where Preity had a special appearance. This film, however, put all my doubts to rest, especially in Main Yahan Hoon. Whew! That song was scorching!
I'm just going to list some thoughts about the movie, because everything else would be pretty incoherent at this point. I'm pretty sure most of the people on my f-list who are interested in Bollywood have seen this film ages ago, but I'm still avoiding obvious spoilers, just in case.
What I liked
- The music and the song picturisations. There were several great songs in the film. My favourites were Lodi, Do Pal, Main Yahan Hoon, the qawwali and Tere Liye.
- the songs were subtitled!!!
- Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini's special appearance and all of the village sequence
- the feminist message: Rani Mukherji as a Pakistani lawyer,
Preity divorcing her husband and continuing Amitabh and Hema's characters' work in the village, promoting schooling for girls, the women's independence and strength, etc.
- the parting at the train station
- Shahrukh looked GREAT in those faded jeans and the pilot jacket and acted really well as the beaten down, tired and resigned Veer in the prison sequences.
What I didn't like
- Lata's voice in the first song when Zaara wakes up, though later on I was so caught up with the story that it didn't bother me any more.
- the film slowed down a bit too much during the trial.
- At times I felt there were too many songs, especially in the beginning of the film.
- the crappy quality of the rental dvd :P (an obvious pirate with soft and very pixellated picture, some slight freezing). Still, at least it played through and only had slight skipping at one point (during Aisa Des Hai Mera), I'll definitely be buying the official YashRaj version for my collection!
