Last book post for 2010

Like I predicted, I did finish a couple more books before the new year. I'll just post comments on them, so I can do the traditional year end book poll afterwards :).

88. Charles de Lint: Mulengro
I've liked Charles de Lint's work for quite some time. This is one of his older works, originally published in 1985.

The book is an urban fantasy where someone or something is killing gypsies while blaming them of having abandoned the traditional ways. A motley band of characters gets together to fight the killer, the mulengro of the title, who is insane and thinking he is purging the gypsies. The story is told by several different characters' viewpoints. It was enjoyable, but not the best book by this author.

89. Fumi Yoshinaga: Ooku: The Inner Chambers 3
This volume continues the story of the first female shogun in a world where a mysterious plague has killed/is killing most of the male population. It is a story of a time of change, where the society is adapting to the new situation, women taking a more active role and how more and more lords are adopting their daughters as the heir to the title instead of any sons who might die of the plague.

I really like this manga, even though the archaic language used in the English translations does throw me off every now and then. The solid worldbuilding and the interesting story and characters keep me in, however.

And that's it for 2010. I do hope I can make myself do these book posts more often this year, so I don't build up these ridiculous backlogs like last year. I also hope I will be able to read more book, since less than 90 books in a year is a ridiculously small number in my opinion. Only 4 years ago I was at 185 books/year, but the amount has been declining year after year since then.
